Gordon “Gordy” Carlson was born on March 22, 1936 in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin to John and Alice Carlson. He passed away peacefully on June 2, 2021 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was home to him since WWII ended.

After moving to Grand Rapids with his family, Gordy graduated from Union High School, Class of 1954 and was awarded the Jon Bos Athletic Scholarship to GRJC. After graduation, he attended GRJC and was an athlete in basketball and baseball. It was there that Gordy met his future bride, Susan Johnson in 1957. He ultimately obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College. A monumental day in Gordy’s life was on August 1, 1959, when he married the love of his life, Sue.

Gordy and Sue have been members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids for over 60 years. In 1957, Gordy began playing for his beloved Sullivan’s Baseball Team under Bob Sullivan and continued for many years. From 1960 to 1966, he served in the Army National Guard and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant E-6.

Gordy was loved by all of his cronies at Scott Lake CC, Bob’s Bar, the Elbow Room and yes, of course, Ducks. He enjoyed the game of golf with all of its challenges of hitting from the left side of the ball, and sometimes putting the ball 30 yards from the green. He always hoped for another Tiger’s World Series Championship, and still insisted that the Lions could win on Sundays, too. He loved to sing in the church choir and the Grand Rapids Symphony Side-Kicks.

During Gordy and Sue’s nearly 62 years of marriage, they were blessed with their 3 sons, Steve (Sue), Mic (Susan) and Matt (Anne). Gordy cherished his boys and his beautiful daughters-in-law. He also adored his only grandchild, Chase, and shared with him a mutual love of baseball, the greatest game there is.

A Memorial Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 16th from 3-5 PM at Reyers North Valley Chapel, followed by the Memorial at 5 PM. A Celebration of Gordy’s life will be held at St. Adalbert’s Fraternal Aid (Fifth Street Hall, 701 5th St NW) following the Service at 6 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Francis of Assisi Sculpture Garden (https://instrumentsofhope.net/support-ioh/) or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gordy from his son Mic. I met Mic about 36 years ago and I have had the honor of being part of the extended family ever since. I have so, so many memories of spending time with Gordy and the family. Countless Christmas parties, wonderful summer vacations including being invited to stay with the family at the Homestead upnorth years ago. Endless summer dinners and outdoor events over the years to many to count. Gordy and Sue built a wonderful life together and created a fabulous family and it was always a treat being able to spend time with him no matter what we were doing. Thanks for all of the love and memories Gordy. We will miss you dearly my friend but you will forever be in our hearts. Love Stacey, Bill and Tabor Vits.

I remember years ago when Mic’s art was displayed at the cottage bar and Gordy gave him a lovely tribute. He also delighted the crowd with a song and some special stories. It was evident that there was a special bond in this family. May happy memories strengthen you with this sad time.

Gordy was a big part of our family. My mom and dad looked at him as the son they never had. When he married Sue, we all were so happy for them both. And, were happy when the boys were born. Everyone who met him, loved him so much. Condolences to his wife and his family. Prayers for healing for them.

I have been a friend of Gordy for the past 75 years. It is with sadness that I say a few words about him.

We met at the age of ten. He had moved to Grand Rapids with his parents from Wisconsin. While they were looking for a home, my parents invited them to stay with us. We became best buds. Biking, swimming, singing, and I’m sure getting into trouble.

Those who knew Gordy can appreciate his character. He was kind, loving, and had good sense of humor.

It’s hard to think that I’m not going to see him anymore. But I will always remember his quick wit and the infectious laugh that would bring joy to the room. I know he's in a better place looking down at us all, and is surely smiling at me as I write about him.

Gordy’s life was taken away from us suddenly and it is hard to understand why things like this happen. However, this is a question without an answer and he would not want us to dwell on the loss of our dear husband, father and special friend.

One of Gordy’s great joys of life was singing. And I can just picture his arrival in heaven. With the golden gates swinging wide open, the trumpets resounding, and the choir of angels greeting him singing “Amazing Grace”.

He was someone special. I will deeply miss him!

Farewell dear friend!

I am sorry to hear about Gordy's passing and I would like to extend my condolences to his family and friends. When I think of Gordy, I think of a special human being who lit up a room with his kind spirit and his humor, he could make you belly laugh until your stomach hurt! My prayers are with you.
