

WEST, John (Jack) David, age 89, of Grand Rapids, entered into eternal life on May 9, 2020. Born on October 28, 1930 to Ephriam and Catherine West. Husband of 61 years to the late Elaine " La Chance" West.Father of Jaclyn (Mike) Ryan, David West, Brian (the late Diane) West, Craig (Carla) West and Geralyn West; grandfather of Isaac Frasier and Jordyn (Blake) Frasier-Hill, Nick (Andrea) West, Robyn (Jack) Speaks, Rachael, Samuel and Kevin Kohler, Brett (A.J.) Oesch, K.C. West, great-grandfather of Ayla, Ruby and Arlis Oesch, and of Owen and Declan West, and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded by his parents, beloved wife Elaine, granddaughter (Kailah), two brothers (Edwin & Oren), a half-brother (William), two sisters (Rosemary & Elizabeth) and a half-sister (Elizabeth).Jack was a proud Army veteran of the Korean war, serving in the infantry and was a purple heart recipient. He returned from war and married the love of his life, Elaine. Jack was a career insurance underwriter up until his retirement. Jack and Elaine were long-time active members of St. Jude Catholic Church, raising their children in a home of faith and Christian values.After retiring, Jack and Elaine traveled routinely to the East Coast and rarely missed the annual northern Michigan color tour. In addition to being an avid reader and history buff, Jack was an enthusiastic “master” gardener and his yard was admired by passers-by and used for family photo ops. He was a longtime member and one of the first volunteers for the Frederik Meijer Gardens. He spent many volunteer hours over the years planting, decorating for the holidays, and as a docent in the tropical conservatory. He also volunteered at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. He passed his deep reverence and respect for nature unto his children and grandchildren. Jack loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending special weekend visits with them as they grew.Jack was a friendly and humble man, helping others and never expecting recognition. His family will miss him dearly, but his cheerful disposition will stay with all who knew him.There will be a private ceremony to remember Jack at a later date.
