

Joyce was born in Lansing, Michigan, to Ruth and Corydon Kernen who have preceded her in death, where she spent her early years and graduated from Eastern High School. She continued her education at Davenport College, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree. Joyce began her professional career serving in the United States Coast Guard, demonstrating her commitment to service early in life. She later continued her career as a contract administrator with the Department of Defense, where she was known for her diligence and integrity.
Joyce shared a loving partnership with her husband, Donald Bouws, who remains to cherish her memory. She is also lovingly remembered by her niece, Marni Epstein, and Marni’s spouse, Charlie Baird.
Joyce found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved bargain shopping, walking, cooking, gardening, and solving puzzles. She was deeply devoted to caring for her friends and family, always offering kindness and support. In her younger years, Joyce was an avid golfer, bowler, and runner, embracing an active and energetic lifestyle.
Joyce also had a playful and sentimental side, reflected in her cherished collections of Cabbage Patch dolls, frogs, and troll dolls. Joyce had an infectious laugh that made any situation enjoyable. She was incredibly generous of her time and loved buying gifts for her close family and friends.
Joyce will be remembered for her steady presence, her thoughtful nature, and the love she shared with those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and enduring care for others.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Private Celebration of Life for Family and Close Friends will be held at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave N.E., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505, on April 9, 2026, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, with a short service to take place at 11:30 am.
