Judy passed away on Friday, April 29th, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer and was received with joy by the Lord her God and Savior. Preceded in death by her parents Albert and Bernice Van Nevel, and brother Albert Van Nevel Jr. Survived by her husband of 46 years Robert, son Michael, sister Louise Cernekee, brother-in-law Patrick Cernekee, sister-in-law Carol Van Nevel, and nephews and nieces. Judy was born and raised in Chicago in 1943—moving to Grand Rapids in 1980 by way of Florissant, Mo; Buffalo Grove, IL; Schaumburg, IL; and Battle Creek, MI. Judy started her administrative career in 1980 at Union Bank as a pioneer in word processing—a skill she used for the rest of her life. She enjoyed organizing and planning events and the like – happy times. Some of her most enjoyable times were working for, then becoming a partner in The Wordsmiths, and later working with Realtor Marie Hillery, and being on the Advisory Board of the Northview Senior Citizens. The Seniors gave her fellowship, friendship, and great pleasure. She also enjoyed travelling and spending “get-a-way” times at Bed & Breakfast’s. Always reminiscing about Paris, Quebec City, and the Biltmore Estate. Judy also restarted the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Jude. She was always considerate and willing to help others. She also believed in giving an occasional random act of kindness – it gave her heart a glow. Heaven is getting a most precious person. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1120 Four Mile N.E., Grand Rapids, MI with Rev. Thomas Page Celebrant. Visitation will be held Monday, May 2nd, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to Northview Senior Citizens, with envelopes provided at the funeral home.
