Laurie,
     You were the true measure of grace and dignity no matter what life handed you, and you always made sure your beautiful children knew they were worth the world and more.
     My life is richer for having known you.

As a child my mother was the center of my universe, I can see her now as I saw her when I was 11 years old, beautiful, hands always working, mouth always quietly singing some 1960's rock song, pink apron on, feet dancing around to her song while washing the dishes or folding laundry. I remember her happy, I remember my happiness. 

Later as a child, I watched as her happiness was threatened with tragedy, when the days were dark, and when nightfall brought with it a pain that transcended sorrow and manifested itself into a physical aching. 

And I watched her rise, I watched as she rebuilt a happiness  for us more complete than any I had known. I watched her work…hard. Everyday, long hours, high pressure law firm, 2 children at home, and a house to maintain entirely by herself. 

But it's not just that she was a tremendous fighter, it's what she wasn't; not bitter, nor hardened, nor cynical. Always seeking beauty in all things. She strived towards what was beautiful; made everything she touched more beautiful. Not only did she manage the physical maintenance of the house by herself, she made it into a home that could have been pulled from the cover of French Country Living.

Every gift she wrapped, every meal she cooked, every perfectly coordinated outfit she wore, beautiful. 
The way she had compassion of both sides of any conflict was certainly beautiful, as was her nurture and constant cheerleading of my brother and I. She raised us to believe that anything we wanted to do was within our reach. 
The greatest injustice of her life is that after she had conquered all the tragedy and adversity in her life….it was then that her ability to enjoy the beautiful things was taken from her. Singing, gone. Dancing, gone. Beautifying her house, gone. Having an easy conversation with her family or many girlfriend's, gone. Enjoying a meal…gone.
So cruel was the nature of her disease that I often wondered what kept her from giving up, from wallowing in despair or becoming cynical. But she'd been gracefully and forcefully fighting though adversity for so long, she simply didn't know how to stop, even when the consequences were dangerous to her safety. 

She was stubborn, but she was also an absolute marvel. The strongest, most intelligent, and beautiful woman I've ever know. Her lessons were so profound that even though she has died, I continue to learn from her. 
As an adult myself now, I watched my mother in her illness.  When my kids would go barreling ahead of me into her room, I would watch her face light up, the joy pour out, her beauty still radiating. 

At 55 she had probably imagined that she would finally be seeing Europe, that she would be encountering those French hills that had inspired the beauty of her home decor. Instead, she found herself sitting in a wheelchair in an Assisted Living facility. 

I ordered just about anything mom needed through Amazon and she'd save the bubble wrap from the packaging so that my kids could stomp on it with all their might, making popping noises that sounded like large explosions.  It's possible I've never seen her happier than in the moments we shared these past two years, or that I never heard her laugh more fully than when Addy would say, “Oh Granma, you make me wet again!” (the drooling obviously)

Mom still found the will to fight each day anew because she never stopped seeing beauty, because after-all, beauty was wherever she was. It was on the faces of her grandchildren, or in a comfy pair of slippers sent from a sister, or in a single bulb of a stubborn plant (a gift from another sister.) 

“I think it's going to bloom,” see said to me the last day we were in her apartment together. And when I returned to her apartment 10 days later (after her death) it had bloomed- so beautiful that it made me gasp. I vowed that I would always cherish this plant and would never let it die...ever. And over the past 4 weeks I have given it constant well-intended care and each day it gets deader. Defeated, I finally decided to give up on it and leave it alone. The soil dried up to the consistency of sand, I thought all hope was lost, but sure enough, today it bloomed again. Like her, it's a fighter, and it's beautiful.

As a colleague of Laurie's at Meijer for years, the first thing I think about her is her beautiful hair, elegance and fashion. Pure vanity on my part to think that way, but hey, she was a good looking woman!  Beneath the exterior was an equally fascinating person, with charm, smarts, a funny wit, strong character (yes, stubborn) and strength that surprised even her.  I always managed to make her laugh, even when it was no laughing matter, but we shared a similar sense is irony. We had our differences - I mocked her love of baseball and cowboys, she scoffed at my love of Pink Floyd as "too dark" - but that didn't keep her from driving across town to bring me soup after I had surgery, or share ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery with me for lunch, or turn me on to tv shows she thought I would like (which she was right about). Her recall of trivia...music, movies, actors, politics...you name it, was impressive and dependable. She never lost any of that person throughout her illness, still that same interesting and lovely being right to the end. Her goal in life was to provide for her children and raise them well.  Much like other aspects of her life, she was successful at that too.  We ALL lost a spirited soul, unique to each of those she touched, but no one would begrudge her the freedom and peace she surely must have in heaven...she earned it!!  Miss her now and always.

My non-judgmental secret keeper.  I always thought that's why her eyes twinkled so. She had so much on me. Sometimes even took the fall for me; but never from grace. I will always cherish our memories and feel so fortunate to be able to see her wonderful spirit in her children and grandchildren.  My lil matching buddy in pink. Love and miss you beyond words.

I will forever miss my big sister.  She was my confidant, my role model, my friend. I can only exclaim how fortunate I was to have such a wonderful presence in my life. Her children and grandchildren are a lasting legacy to a life well lived.  I miss her.

Most people knew my mom as Laurie Dumdei: A Paralegal who was good at her job and even better at supporting her two children.  I happened to see my mother in a different way.  I knew her to be tough, decisive, and, at times, frustratingly stubborn.  She knew how to truly affect a change in me when I was acting in a way that wasn't to her liking.  She knew how to punish me when I was doing something wrong, and she always knew when I was doing something wrong.  It was her job, as a single mother to play both the role of the mother and the father.  That made our relationship a complicated one.  One in which I was constantly fighting for independence as an adolescent, and one where she would fight equally hard to keep me safe as I attempted to pull away.  My mother worried about me more than I wanted her to as a teenager.  Perhaps rightfully so.  She was too smart for her own good and had a way of simply seeing through any story I would concoct, regardless of how elaborate it may have been. 

It's interesting how time can change one's perspective.  While I knew my mother to be a certain person before heading off to college, a dramatic shift in my perspective occurred after she became sick.   This moment of realization hit me in one sudden moment when I had just arrived to visit her at her house.  At that point she was still walking, albeit not very well and with the assistance of a walker.  But, immediately when I arrived at the house, I smelled a very familiar and comforting smell: her famous quiche.  The preparation of this dish was labor intensive, taking about an hour to prepare.  That alone should have been enough reason to forego making the quiche.  But, she knew it was my favorite dish of hers and opted to make it when she knew I was coming over to the house.  At that point, she shouldn't have been preparing any meals for herself, let alone anyone else simply due to the fall risk.  But, just as she had been my biggest supporter in life when she was well, she continued to be so even when the disease she had increasingly debilitated her.   

Mom had a very tough life.  One that I don't wish upon anyone.  They say that such hard life experiences build character, and if that's the case, someone should write a screenplay staring my mother, because she had more character than anyone I've ever met.   I saw how as the disease she had further inhibited her quality of life, her general outlook continued to improve.  It was truly remarkable.  She became more positive in the way she lived and viewed life every day.  Even when I would go and visit her at Vista Springs, and she was barely able to talk - I mean BARELY - she would find humor in almost anything that happened to her (even the bad stuff).  There were times when I believed that a misunderstanding on my part had led her to tears, only to find out that she was laughing at the ridiculousness of the entire situation.  She was truly happy, even as she saw the end of her life approaching.  It was inspirational to see someone who had seemingly been stripped of all their dignity by a nasty physical affliction still maintain that dignity in the worst of circumstances.  She was a fighter and she fought for those whom she loved as much as she fought against losing her ability to interact with the world.  I love my mom and it is a deep pain that I feel, having lost her before getting a chance to really understand who she was to all of you out there reading this.  Tell stories about her often, amongst yourselves.  Or, better yet, share them with my sister and I (we're already learning more about her than she ever wanted us to know, lol).  I will always carry her with me and I hope all of you will as well.

Samantha and Joe, I am so, so saddened by the loss of Laurie, your amazing mom.  She was such a wonderful person - so intelligent and insightful, in this quiet and low-key way, with so much humor and empathy.  I always looked forward to what she had to say at family gatherings, and felt so lifted by her presence whenever I saw her.  We were both new moms at the same time, and I remember how we shared some of those joys and challenges - the beauty and reality of ordinary life with babies...

It's been years since I last saw Laurie, much to my sadness.  We last spoke 10 years ago at Emme's graduation Open House, but it was with the same closeness of spirit that meant so much to me when you were all little kids.  I wish I'd done a better job of keeping in touch, and of lending my support during her illness.  She deserved it and much more.

Laurie and I met when she came to Sacred Heart in high school. We spent many Friday and Saturday nights during our college years (when it was legal to drink at age 18) grabbing some beer and hitting the roads to Beal City or going to Kevin Halls house to just hang out. In talking to her in the last 5 years I know how devoted and proud she was of Samantha and Joe. So proud to have called her my friend.

Aunt Laurie was a woman who celebrated creativity in all its forms: being in her space meant singing at the top of your lungs, dancing around kitchens, and reenacting your favorite television scenes. She didn't care when she got song lyrics wrong because, at the very least, those around her were left laughing. I will miss my amazing Aunt Laurie, but take eternal comfort in the legacy she left for Sam, Joe, Mike, Jack, and Addy. A legacy that means she can once again dance like no one's watching, while she watches down on all of us.

Laurie was a kind soul. I had the pleasure if getting to know her while training for a marathon while raising funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It was difficult to watch her go from a proud finisher of a 13 mile run to having a hard time walking but she never lost her mental strength or determination. She taught me how to be graceful and stylish in any circumstance and i will always be grateful for knowing her the short time I did.

I'm so grateful to have had Laurie as my sister. She was always quietly supportive and comforting to me as I was growing up. Laurie was witty, smart, charming and kind. I'll never forget the time that Dan, Bruce and I spent with Laurie after Samantha's wedding. She was so happy then and it was gratifying to be able to share that perfect moment in time with her. She will live in my memory and in my heart.

Coming from a large family, it was important for each member to stand out, express their own unique voice. And it is only after experiencing the loss of Aunt Laurie that I'm hearing the distinct silence left in her absence. She was such a bright, energetic light encouraging and loving all those around her. She will be terribly missed but constantly celebrated for what she contributed to the world and to our family.

As she was the sibling closest to me in age, Laurie and I inevitably were close growing up and ever after. She introduced me to poetry, lyrics, the best of music, television and film. She taught me that you could do homework while far above the ground while sitting in a tree, and helped me find my creative spark that has served me well as an adult. She was a classy woman who displayed grace under pressure, she was a woman who gave birth to two amazing children -- both of whom grew into equally amazing adults. What else can I write? On an almost daily basis I still get the urge to call her whenever I hear a song by the Guess Who or Marmalade on the radio, and am crushed when I remember in the middle of dialing her number that we'll no longer share the half-century of memories we had together. She was my sister, but she was so, so much more.

I knew Laurie only for the short time we worked together at Meijer.  We became fast friends in discovering that we had walked many of the same paths.  We spent countless lunch hours discussing the state of the world and politics; we enjoyed many movies together (of which she was expert); and musical events.  She was one of my best fans at the concerts I sang in even venturing out in a snow storm just this past December to be in the audience.  She introduced me to the beautiful St. Andrews Cathedral where we enjoyed the Men & Boy's Christmas concert each year to bring in the holidays.  I will always honor her when I sit in that space. Our last outing was Christmas shopping where she poured over doll clothes in choosing gifts for Addy and then at an art show, where she looked over everything twice in picking out a gift for Samantha.  She never lost her love of fine things.  As talking was difficult – especially while driving - we played music and sang and laughed .  A fond memory is driving her home after a fun birthday picnic her work buddies had for her last summer.  She had shared some Sangria with us and as I was driving her home, while thinking she was crying, I realized she was laughing hysterically, which got me started.  What a blast!  She kept that spirit so often throughout her tragedy.  But the last memory I have that will stay with me always is the night she moved out of the ICU knowing that she was on comfort care only.  I came down to the hospital late one night after she had been quite anxious with the move.  It was a bitterly cold, snowing night.  When I walked in the room, Samantha and Joe had moved her bed to the center of the room and angled it so she was looking right out her corner window.  She had a view of the city and the lighting was so beautiful it took my breath away for a moment.  Although she wasn't speaking, she communicated everything we needed to know with her eyes.  We shared some laughs and there was so much love in that room.  I choose to think that at that moment she knew her children (who meant the world to her) were together and that they were pretty awesome.  On my drive home I had music on that I'd been listening to for an upcoming concert and as I pulled in my driveway a beautiful piece of work set to a poem by Walt Whitman called "Sleep" came on.  That poem became something very different to me at that moment and gave me a sense of piece for Laurie for the first time.  So to Samantha, Joe, Jack & Addy:  She was kind, she was smart, and she was important.

Spending part of my winter breaks with her when Sam and Joe were babies are some of my most favorite memories. She taught me how to be the coolest babysitter and helped me to be the mother I am today. I see her love, beauty, and spirit in Samantha, Joe, Jack, and Addy. I will miss her terribly.

Laurie never let the physical indignity of her illness affect her personal dignity. She loved beautiful things and kept herself surrounded by what she loved: the Tigers, colors, flowers, books, and especially her children and grand-children.

One of the things I loved about Laurie (and miss) is her sense of humor.  No matter what was going on, we always ended up laughing about it.  We spent lots of hours walking and talking, watching the Tigers together and just hanging out.  She was a true friend who I could share anything with and felt like part of our family.  We will always remember her with love.  My heart goes out to Joe and Samantha and Mike and their children.

Laurie and I worked together for a short time, but she remains in my heart forever. I will always remember laughing with her and her beautiful eyes and smile. Her strength was monumental. She had some very tough times, but her grace and courage always shined. Fly with the angels, dear friend. You've earned your wings.

Laurie was a 2nd cousin of mine.  She & I went to school together. We rode the same school bus to Shepherd schools.   Laurie was always a very good friend to me & my twin sister.  She was always such a wonderful person & always found the best in everyone.  I am so sorry for you loss.  I know she will be missed .

I met Laurie working in the bookstore at CMU. Laurie was always great at being a friend. I enjoyed her sense of humor and loving nature and I admired her ability to keep on going when things got tough. One of the last times we got together we poured through old picture albums,laughing and reminisced about the good ole days. I am a lucky person to have had Laurie as my life-long friend. 
She will be greatly missed.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  Peace.

The last time I saw Laurie was in the Sacred Heart church parking lot; she was climbing into the back seat of her car next to the infant seat of her new born baby.
