

Lew proudly served his country in the United states Air Force for 4 years. After he was honorably discharged, he went on to work for General Motors as the manager of the sewing department for 34 years. In his retirement, Lew could not keep still. He took several odd jobs, including a school bus driver in Big Rapids and security at Gerber in Fremont. He also loved to shop on Amazon. In his free time, Lew loved to be outdoors. You could find him camping, canoeing, or hunting. When he was playing in the wilderness, he was on the open road on his motorcycle. In The last 6 months of his life, Lew would often say he lived a good life and was ready when his time was up. He was always a happy person that knew how to brighten your day. He loved to be social and tell stories. Lew was a light to many and he will be dearly missed by all.
Lew was preceded in death by: parents, Clarence and Anna Dougherty; second wife, Marilyn Dougherty; daughter, Michelle McGarry; siblings, Patricia (Paul) Koeber, William Dougherty, and Terrance (Kathy) Dougherty; brother-in-law, Jerry Price; and sister-in-law, Judy Dougherty.
Lew is survived by: children, Deb (Tom) Bullen, Lewis Carl Dougherty Jr., Jodie (Otto) Brannum, Lisa Wright, Terri (Bob) Despres, and Brenda (Bill) Ruder; step-children, Pam (Curt) Chaffee, Peg (John) Conner, Pat Miller, Mike Warner, Ken (Chris) Warner, and Dan (Jackie) Warner; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Arlin Dougherty; sister, Betty Lou Price; sister-in-law, Dee Dougherty; first wife, Dorothy Sonke; as well as, many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at 1:00pm at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. The family will welcome guests one hour prior to the start of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan.
