

He was born on December 25, 1928 in Grand Rapids to Gladys M. and Vio J. Coles. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Sally Coles, his children Diane (Ken) White, Jamie (Robert) Johnson, Rebecca Hopping, David Coles and Kerri (Vic) Tuinstra, grandchildren Heath (Dejah) Daigle, Kristen (TJ) Kane, Lauren (Danny) Thompson, the late Robert Johnson II, Amanda (Mike) Schlicker, Elizabeth Johnson, Dustan (Maria) Hopping, Erik (Melissa) Hopping, Sydney Coles, Renae Coles and Kelly (Rodney) Harris. Richard is also survived by 19 great grandchildren.
Richard was proud to have served in the U.S. Army in Japan as a part of occupation troops. Richard was a graduate of Creston High School in 1946 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Michigan State University in 1952. He devoted over 30 years of his life selling life insurance and investments, gaining great trust and building relationships for many years.
He was a member of the Baptist church for many years and had a great love for the Lord, which he showed through different ways of serving. Richard enjoyed singing, sports, traveling, eating good food, training dogs for Paws with a Cause, spending time with family on many trips across the country.
Richard will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8 from 2-5 PM at Reyers North Valley Chapel. Richard's Funeral Service will be on Monday, March 9 at 11 AM, friends and family may gather an hour prior at the funeral home. Richard will be laid to rest at Fairplains Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice in honor of Richard.
