With the events of Vietnam unfolding, Richard was proud to serve his country in the Army from 1957 to 1959. Upon his honorable discharge, Richard returned to his hometown where he settled into the custom window treatments business.
After working for several years at Steketee’s in their drapery work room, Richard went into business for himself. He owned and operated Contract Draperies Specialist for over 30 years before turning the reigns over to his son.
A man of faith, Richard and his wife Evelyn, were members at Berkley Hills Church.
When Richard wasn’t being the professional business man, and took time to play, he was frequently found working on his antique cars. He had a Cadillac at first, but eventually purchased a 1961 Thunderbird that quickly became his favorite. He also enjoyed the peacefulness of fishing. Whether it was salmon from the Big Lake or sailfish out of the Gulf, the thrill of pulling a trophy always left Richard feeling accomplished.
Always a man with a quiet demeanor, he took pride in his daily work whether it was tinkering on his old car or waiting for the fish to bite, Richard will be missed by many and fondly remembered.
Richard is remembered by his wife Evelyn; his son Richard (Patricia) Secord, Jr.; his sister Deta (Richard “Dick”) Klinge; his brother Wayne (Pricilla) Secord; his step-grandchildren: Stephanie (Justin) VanderVeen, Michelle (Adam) Patterson and Charles Harlett and his step-great grandchildren: Alaina, Ethan & Oliva VanderVeen as well as many nieces and nephews.
