

Robert L. Hawley, aged 92 died on June 15, 2016 at Spectrum Health Butterworth under the care of hospice. Bob proudly served his country under General Patton as a member of the United States Army during World War II earning several medals including two bronze stars. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University and his Master's degree from University of Michigan. Bob worked for the Grand Rapids Public Schools for over 35 years, first as a teacher at Sheldon School and then as a principal at Henry Elementary and East Leonard. In those early days of his career, he would earn extra money for his family, refereeing basketball games, umpiring baseball games and running the pools for the City of Grand Rapids during the summer months. The impact that Bob left on the lives of those he came in contact with will never be forgotten. He was a gifted athlete with a passion for baseball. Bob pitched ball for his high school team, the US Army, and American Seating's team here in Grand Rapids. After his baseball career was over he taught himself how to play golf and became an accomplished player scoring 5 holes in one. Bob loved to spend time with his kids and the special moments he shared with his grandchildren. He was a life time member of Grand Rapids Elks Lodge, Casino Club of Grand Rapids, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. Bob liked traveling with Rosie to Myrtle Beach for their winters. In his later years, he enjoyed going to Senior Dances with Jerre. He liked his visits to the casinos and his Friday afternoon bridge games. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Baer, Rebecca and Dr. Ruzmetova for their excellent care and compassion they provided for our father. Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife Rosie and son-in-law Rick Rickson. He is survived by his children Sharon and Ron Westveld, Sue Rickson, Rob Halley and Mohndera Gezall, Bill and Nide Hawley, grandchildren Liz Westveld, AnnMarie and Justin Lucas, Sara and Brian Haas, John Rickson (fiancee Britni Spontelli), Aaron and Brandon Hongerholt, great grandchildren Jerica and Dezarae Westveld, Evelyn and Liam Lucas, Ella and Aurora Haas and nieces and nephews. Bob leaves behind a loving and caring friend Jerre Boshoven. He was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa and he will be missed by his children, grandchildren and numerous friends. Visitation to be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Reyers North Valley Chapel from 2:00pm to 4:30pm followed by a memorial service with Deacon Jim Hessler ending with a military honors.
