After high school, Bob continued his education at the University of Illinois where he was part of the Pershing Rifles team. With a degree in hand, he entered the US Army as an officer. During his service, he was stationed in Germany. As the only officer aboard his plane, he escorted a classified package through East Berlin into West Berlin. He also found time to have fun while overseas, he was able to attend the World’s Fair in Brussels.
After his honorable discharge, Robert went back to school at the University of Chicago and earned his MBA. He spent his career working in accounting and finance. He retired from Eagle Ottawa leather Company. However, Bob said his most interesting job was working for Winchester-Western Ammunition Works, and he most enjoyed his retirement job at Handy Wacks, Corp.
When Bob was not working, he enjoyed many hobbies. He loved archery and only putting the bow down when he no longer had the physical strength to maintain proper form. He enjoyed reading history, science and science-fiction and listening to peaceful jazz and classical music. He used his creative skills with wood burning. Bob had a fascination with computers that started in his first computing class in 1957.
He enjoyed traveling and was able to see Europe, Cuba and much of North America. He also was active in the Northview Senior Citizens. He enjoyed his friends and interactions within the group, because he puts it, they kept him from “being a couch potato”.
Most importantly, Robert will be remembered for being a devoted husband, loving father and kind friend. He is survived by his son Michael, brother-in-law Patrick Cernekee and sister-in-law Louise Cernekee as well several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Judith and his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will held on Monday March 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Northview Senior Citizens.
