

Ronald Allen Hoort, aged 67, died peacefully Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in his home, surrounded by loved ones. Ron served his country as a lieutenant in the Army, stationed in Germany. Known widely as “Hoort”, he was one of the original prime movers of the Heritage Hill Association, serving as realtor, historian, tour guide and general rabble rouser. He was publisher of Michigan Cyclist Magazine and NORBA News and, since 1999, was owner of Elders’ Helpers. He loved cars, was an avid book collector, and could be seen around town walking his bear of a dog, Oscar. Surviving are his sons Todd Hoort (Skyelar Smith) and Troy Hoort (Kristy Tibor), daughter Melissa Brooks (Steve Boehringer, husband), his grandchildren Molly and Elle, his wife Nikki Hoort, his partner Lisa Locke, sisters Cindy Simons (Charlie), Linda Joy Vasquez, Gayla Higley (Dave), and Lori Hoort, stepsister LynnAnne Brown, brother Steve Hoort (Sondra ), several nieces and nephews, stepmother Linda Hoort and a large community of friends – and his wonder dog Oscar and old man cat Jordan. He was preceded in death by his father, Al Hoort, his mother, Margaret Koens, his brother Tommy Hoort and his brother-in-law, Henry Vasquez. A memorial celebration will be held Sunday, January 9, 2:00 p.m. at Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St NE, with a reception following. The Reverend David Smith officiating. The family will also greet friends and relatives noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ron's memory may be made to the Salvation Army or Melanoma Research Foundation.
