

Virginia entered the gates of heaven on December 18, 2021, having lived a long and glorious life. Virginia was born in October 1928 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Leon and Clara Pierce. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon & Clara Pierce, her son Bruce Whalen, her second husband John VanHooren, third husband Frederick McEvoy, her sisters Dorothy (Ernest) Granstrom, Marion (Johnny) Zenk, Peggy (Jesse) Knipp, Charlotte Pierce and granddaughter Thresa Palmer.
She is survived by her children Doris (Bruce) Inman, Pat (Charlie) Brown, Paul Whalen, Kathy (Barry) Allen, Barb Skarvan, Edward (Vicki) Van Hooren, Leo (Pat) Van Hooren and Elizabeth Van Hooren. Grand children Rebecca (Matt) Kirkwood, Brad Whalen, Brent (Jessica) Whalen, Robin (Jeremy) Fettig, Sarah (Corey) Shea, Ben (Mary) Brown, Andy (Molly) Brown, PJ Whalen, Jon (Christy) Whalen, Amanda Whalen, Allysa (Mark) Chiaverini, David (Andrea) Allen, Nicholas (Ashley) Allen, Lisa (Johnny) VanWyk, Mitchell Huckleberry and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by many step children and step grandchildren from her marriage to Fred McEvoy.
While raising nine children, she taught many valuable life lessons. Her priorities were to teach her children to have empathy for others and to always follow the golden rule.
Virginia retired to Sunny Hills Florida where she lived for 30 years. She loved to play golf and found a passion for baking cakes. She was a devout Christian and spent many years working for the church, which included baking cakes and goodies for many church functions, as well as other fund raisers.
Virginia loved to travel and included trips to the Netherlands and Ireland, but her favorite get-a-way was Mackinaw Island where she and John honeymooned and revisited many times.
She celebrated 25 years of marriage to John before he passed in 1989. She then met and fell in love with Fred and celebrated 25 years of marriage with him, enjoying the addition of many step children and step grandchildren to her life.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on December 22, 2021 at St Patrick’s Church, 4351 Parnell Ave NE, Ada MI., with Father Tom Cavera officiating. Relatives and friends may gather before the service to meet the family from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
Memorial contributions in memory of Virginia may be made to St. Patrick’s Church.
