

Winola Faye “Winnie” Peterson, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2026. She was born in Grand Rapids on September 19, 1954, to Winfrel & Magnolia (Kilgore) Peterson. Winnie spent her childhood attending the local schools and graduated from Union High School in 1972.
She had a strong work ethic, and spent her career working for GM. She retired after 18 years of service. She was a woman of deep faith, and she valued her Christian beliefs. She was an active member of River Point Church in Houston, Texas.
A woman of many interests, Winnie enjoyed playing Spades and Bingo, as well as trips to the casino. She loved her water aerobics and Silver Steppers. When she preferred quiet, she was an avid reader and appreciated a good old black & white movie or TV show.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Winnie raised her family with a quiet and composed demeanor. Always protective and loyal, you always knew where you stood as she was also straightforward.
Winnie was down to earth and valued stability, routines and tangible results. She thrived when everything was orderly and in-control. She lived life with intelligent and thoughtful grace. Always looking at the big picture, she made deliberate and carefully planned decisions. She was a strong and caring woman who lived her life fully and with the strength and resilience of a fighter.
Winola is survived by her children: Nera (Usman) Alli and Antione (Latasha) Jones; her grandchildren: Isaiah Jones, Zamarion Jones, Amiyah Guy, Antione J.L. Jones, Fenix Jones, Jahlil Sheppard, Aliyah Jones, Venson Earvin, Aisha “Nana” Alli, Musa “Baba” Alli, Mecca “Magnolia” Alli and Muhammad Louis “Beeman” Alli; her sisters: Sheilla Johnson and Debra Walker; special cousin Sandra Irabor, and special nephew Karl Jones as well as many other relatives.
Winnie was preceded in death by her partner in life Louis Peter Jones, her grandson Mohammad Alli; her brother James “Peter” Peterson and her parents.
Visitation for Winnie will be held on Thursday February 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Reyers North Valley Chapel where her funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial near her parents will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. with a reception from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at Covenant Park Clubhouse.
