Barbara (Hinds) VanWormer, age 93 from Jenison, peacefully drifted into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family November 27, 2024. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and special aunt to so many.
Barbara was born December 1, 1930 in Newman, IL to Harold and Pauline Hinds. Her family moved to the Grand Rapids area when she was young. Barbara graduated valedictorian from Wyoming Park High School, earned an academic scholarship, and attended the University of Michigan. Barbara found her calling to be a nurse and graduated in 1952 from Mercy Central School of Nursing. Barbara worked as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI for over 30 years and continued her nursing career in Florida. She was a longtime member of Georgetown United Methodist Church in Jenison and truly enjoyed volunteering with several groups but especially enjoyed being part of the "prayer shawl" ministry.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her brother, John Hinds; and was a beloved mother to Debra (Steve) Warnaar, Dr. Dennis (Lisa) VanWormer, Douglas VanWormer, Denise (Charles) Husby, and Rebecca (Jack) Hopp. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Barbara was a wonderful mother who was always there to support her family, offering her wisdom, love, and encouragement. Barbara left behind a legacy of kindness and strength.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne VanWormer; son, David VanWormer; parents Harold and Pauline Hinds; sister, Marilyn Eldred; and many other family members.
A private graveside service will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Martin Phillips officiating and the Michigan Nursing Honor Guard presiding. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in honor of Barbara VanWormer's nursing career to the Grand Rapids Area Nursing Honor Guard. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guestbook online.
