Carol Sue Hetfield, age 84, went to be with her Lord Thursday, February 1, 2024. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Homer Hetfield; parents Orrin and Audrey Beamish; and sister, Judy Rasmussen. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Mike (Sue) Hetfield, Darrin (Natasha) Hetfield, and Lynelle (Randy) Land; grandchildren Alena (Aiden), Alyssa (Jimmy), Brianna, Kira, Katya, IIya, Celise, Elicia, Haegan, and Stratton; great-grandchildren James, Oliver, and Amelia. She will also be greatly missed by her sister, Shirley (Augie) Kovacic; as well as nieces, nephews, and numerous friends.
Carol’s life revolved around faith and family. Carol attended First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Owosso, serving in a variety of volunteer positions. One of her favorite areas of ministry was found in the FUMC Women’s Group that made Chrismon’s for the Chrismon tree placed in front of the sanctuary every Christmas. Carol and Homer would also serve together in the FUMC after moving to Wyoming and Byron Center, Michigan. In their retirement years, they particularly enjoyed investing their time in the FUMC Food Truck Ministry.
In her early years, Carol enjoyed being a member of a Girl Scout troop which instilled in her values and life lessons useful throughout life. Carol made lifelong friendships in Girl Scouts and remained in contact with many over the years. As time moved forward, she would work for Universal Electric in Owosso, MI before discovering the love of her life on a blind date at the drive-in. “I will never forget those BIG blue eyes." She would eventually marry Homer Hetfield and as their family grew to include three children, Carol’s focus became that of a “domestic engineer,” as Homer would call it. Carol was completely devoted to her family and made sure the family home, and everyone in it, were cared for well. Carol was also involved in her children’s education as a member of the PTA and eventually chose to work in the classroom helping special needs children as a paraprofessional. When her children attended college, she expanded her career working as an administrative assistant at Ziemba, Kienast and Associates. In her retirement, Carol became a full-time grandma focusing her attention on her grandchildren and adult family. Carol leaves her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with a rich heritage of faith and family which will be treasured and stewarded well.
A celebration of Carol’s life will commence 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2024, with visitation one hour prior, at Cook Memorial Chapel (East Building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418. In honor of Carol and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cornerstone Church - South Wyoming Campus (cornerstonemi.org) or Emmanuel Hospice (emmanuelhospice.org). Interment will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
