Dan was a fantastic human being.  A terrific musician and a fun guy to be around!  One time in a rehearsal with the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra, I lost my place in the music..  I said to Dan, "Where are we??"  He says, "Grand Rapids!"  OMGosh!    Oh what a great guy he was - and sweet as peach pie.  I will miss him.  

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge Dan's passing. We knew each other since 1973 and he served as a soloist and guest conductor with my groups at Wyoming Rogers and Jackson Park several times over the years. 
 Our first meeting was at Muskegon Orchard View when I was co-hosting a clinic featuring the trombonist Urbie Green. Dan played trumpet in a dixieland band with Urbie and Rupert Kettle that evening. I was immediately struck with Dan's performance style and was lucky enough to end up in Grand Rapids and have my students work with him - not only at our school, but also at clinics he hosted at Grand Valley. He was a master musician and always meticulously prepared.
 Our profession has lost a great musician, teacher, and humanitarian. My sincere sympathy to the family at this difficult time.

I first met Dan in 1972 while a junior at Hastings High School - he was a featured soloist on Trumpet. I had no idea at the time that he was just as proficient on viola!. At 17, I was struck by a soft spoken man who carried a BIG trumpet. Realize, that I was just a lowly drummer in the back of the room:). We met again while I was auditioning for the GR Youth Symphony. My main regret was I chose another youth group not knowing at the time what an opportunity I missed to be under Dan's direction. During my career as a band and orchestra director, we came in contact many times. Generally, he was adjudicating my concert bands, jazz bands or symphony orchestras - always gracious and complimentary. On occasion we were lucky enough to judge together. He was a treasure to everyone he met as you only had to meet him once never to forget Dan Kovats. My deepest sympathy to his family. With fond memories and friendship, Jeff

Professor Kovats was a mentor, master teacher and incredibly gifted musician. I studied orchestration, class percussion, string techniques, brass rep. and played in the GVSU Studio Jazz Orchestra under his direction. He possessed supernatural musical abilities. In orchestration class, we learned he saw colors for keys (synesthesia), in one of my many guitar juries for him, I learned he could tell the difference between A=440 Hz and A = 442 or 3 Hz.!! In jazz band, we learned that he could borrow any lick, play it in all twelve keys and add it to his repertoire before we could even think. This ability allowed him to skip the ear training portion of first year theory at the University of Michigan!
 My parents knew Prof. Kovats from First United Methodist Church, and he never failed to ask about them. We have lost not only a marvelous music educator, but a kind and gentle soul as well. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Daniel Kovats was such a fantastic musician and music educator. He directed the GVSU band while I was there from 1970-1974. He imparted such a knowledge base and gave all of us so much to build our music repertoire. While at Grand Valley I not only was in band directed by Professor Kovats, but string class and brass class. It was so exciting to me to know that he had perfect pitch and still could teach us without that gift. He will be sadly missed by all. May he rest in peace.

I have very fond memories of the 1976 BLFAC Intenational Orchestra which Dr. Kovats conducted. I'll always remember his sense of humor, his tremendous musicianship and his unending patience even when whatever work we were rehearsing was crashing all around us. One of my biggest regrets is not having attended GVSU after he tried so hard to get me to go there. Rest easy, Dr. Kovats. You've earned it.

Dan and I played together in the trumpet section of the Blue Lake Monster Big Band for many years. What a privilege and pleasure that was. Dan was such a kind, warm man, and an incredible musician and educator. I'm sorry to have lost touch with him over these past years. We have so many fine memories of fun outings with Dan and Char--picnics, strolls through nature centers, movies, museums, and Dan playing his trumpet at our daughter's wedding. We are grateful for all of the good times. With his kind nature, sense of humor, and musical talent (not to mention his wise choice of a wonderful woman as his wife) Dan gave something precious to the world. Thank you Dan.

I have such wonderful memories of Mr. Kovats. He was my trumpet teacher throughout my high school years -- 2001 through 2005 -- and I clearly remember many things that made those lessons amazing. He was a very strong, skilled trumpet player, but he was always very patient with me, even when I was slow to learn something. I remember that he always had a smile on his face, and I remember the duets we would sight-read together. I will miss him very much. My thoughts go out to his family.

Dear Mrs. Kovats:
 Mr. Kovats was my music theory and band director when I was at GRJC from 1964 -66. He was an excellent person and I have very fond memories of him, as an instructor and especially as a person. You may know my brother Don, who was also a friend of Mr. Kovats as Don taught music at GR South Christian for much of his career and judged with Mr. Kovats here and there over the years. 
 Anyway, I'm writing to express my sincere condolences and to tell you that I've always held Mr. Kovats in very high regard. I played tuba in the band and in the GR Jr. Symphony and enjoyed every minute even though he and I both knew that I was not the best musician in the groups. I did go on and finish my music degree at CMU, taught music for just a few years, and then went into public administration for the remainder of my career. I too have been retired for 12 yrs. but have kept up with Mr. Kovats through my brother, each sending greetings through him back and forth.
 Again, please accept my most sincere condolences. Your husband, in my opinion, was one of those teachers that I truly thought the world of and will remember him fondly. 
 May God grant you and your family peace in your loss.

I'm saddened to hear of Professor Kovats passing. I referenced him just this last week when I was teaching. I was very fortunate and blessed to have him as an instructor at GVSC. He was the quintessential quirky professor and I , unfortunately, was one of the students who gave him fits. But his teaching is something that has stuck with me through all of these years and lives on in my students. 
 I remember seeing him in later years at the DMV in the summer and I would apologize every time for being such a troublesome student and would thank him for his influence on me. 
 I'm sure non of us appreciated how talented of a musician he really was and how kind hearted in soul and spirit he was. 
 You'll be missed Professor Kovats. But you will live on in all of your students.

Our family has been blessed with the friendship of Dan and Char for many years. Dan has touched innumerable lives and spread the joy and healing gift of music that will live forever.

I first met Dan when I was still in high school and my dad, (Phil Daab) who was my band director and knew Dan, took a group of us over to hear a performance at GVSC. I then got to know him better when I first began my years as a conductor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and he was there at the same time.
 Dan always impressed me with his talent. He excelled as a trumpet player, a violist, a conductor, a composer and all around good musician. What I loved about Dan, though that set him apart and made him most memorable to me, was that he was a quiet and humble man and one of the kindest, sweetest people that I have ever met. And if you look up the word integrity in the dictionary right next to it you will find a picture of Dan Kovats.
 We will all miss you, Dan.

It is with great sadness that I read this news about Dan. What a gifted musician he was! His enthusiasm was contagious, and when I played in the Youth Symphony, he made it the best orchestral experience I could imagine! He was also a truly kind and decent person. I was amazed at how he knew the name of every member of the youth symphony by the 2nd rehearsal, and over the years he always called me by name when we'd cross paths. I am very saddened to hear of the passing of a great man and musician. I played under Mr. Kovats in GR Youth Symphony for several seasons, and also was a student of his in theory/analysis class at GVSU. He was a great musician, wonderful conductor and I always remember the perfect pitch he had! He always was so kind and welcoming and encouraging to me as a music student. I learned alot from him as a student, and he always remembered me every time I would see him over the years. My condolences to the entire family.

Mr. Kovats has a profound influence on me throughout my career. He reached out by visiting my rehearsals, offering suggestions for repertoire, providing conducting critiques, and listening to my questions. I made sure I had time to sit in his room when he adjudicated solo and ensemble students, and studied his comment tapes after he adjudicated my ensembles. I never left a conversation with Dan without learning something new, and I always walked away a little happier and with a brighter perspective. His passion for music, and his kind and forgiving nature will continue to inspire me. He was a giant of a person.

I have many fond memories of Mr. Kovats. 6 years in the GRYS, a summer at Blue Lake, 3 summers at Olivet College. Plus occasional get-togethers with our families, starting with the excursion to Lake Michigan when son Bill and I wandered off, then were rescued by Mr. Kovats. I still remember the excursion the Youth Symphony took to Detroit in April 1968 to hear a rehearsal with the Detroit Symphony. We visited Greenfield Village as well, and found out about the tragic death of ML King while boarding the bus back. 
 Mr. Kovats was an inspiration to me, and played a significant role in my efforts to develop myself as a musician. I feel very fortunate to have known him and worked with him.

I played violin for 4 years in the youth symphony under Dan. I will always remember when we boarded a huge bus to Chicago to hear the Chicago symphony Orchestra play. What a thrill! And we even ate a meal together in Chicago on the trip. Dan was a wonderful person who loved the Lord.

It is with great sadness that I read of Professor Kovat's passing. I had the honor of playing under him in the GVSU Studio Jazz Orchestra from 1980-84. I can still hear many of his words and silly jokes, as well as see his green checkered performance jacket, and him rowing his trumpet as if he were in a canoe while the jazz band played. I find that I repeat many of his jokes, stories and yes have even paddled the canoe as my own groups perform. The constant drive for better music that was instilled in all of us by professor Kovats has been transfered to many high school programs through our teaching. In addition to being the most talented musician I have ever met, Dan led his life in an exemplary way, becomming a role model for many teachers in the business today. I had the honor of welcoming him into my home as the Orchestra was on tour. It was great to spend personal time as a friend and colleague. Bless you on your final Journey.

I had the opportunity to work with Dan on more than one occasion as he adjudicated our bands and orchestras in MSBOA District XVI - a wonderful person, musician, teacher, and adjudicator - plus a composer, for my junior high school students had the opportunity years ago to perform his composition "March Supersonic" for festival. My deep and heartfelt sympathy to the family, for he will truly be missed by all.

Like many, I was surprised at Dan's ability to do both brass and strings at such a high level of expertise. How rare! Gifted, no doubt, as a real musician. 
 I asked him to transcribe a Pat Metheny piece (in Her House-originally for piano) for bass. I'm sure for him it was another $50 job to do-and he was not sure which key would work for bass, so he transcribed it in BOTH keys. 
 The Kind of Man he was.
 What he did not know was that song he transcribed for me was one of the emotional reasons I was able to get through the hardest part of my life. The emotional bonding of that piece to my soul will never be forgotten Dan. Thank you.
 While Dan changed and positively effected so many people with his 'personal' touch, he also changed so many people with being a musician.
 I hope that I will be so fortunate as Dan was.

And I was always so tickled to see him in other musical settings playing trumpet or any of the other instruments he played. My particular memory that I think of often is how pleased he was with the GRSO members gift to him and you at his retirement from the orchestra. He seemed to be so pleased with the nights stay at the hotel that I will never forget his reaction and response when he received the gift certificate. I really do remember it often. And I will always remember Dan: a kind, thoughtful man and a wonderful musician.

I remember Dan as quiet, great sense of humor, humble, caring, and a musical genius. I stayed with Dan and his mom (Aunt Eva) when I was 4 or 5 years old and he bought me a toy trumpet. He was the inspiration for me to play the trumpet (but I never reached his level of excellence). I know he has been the inspiration for many young people and his music will live on through them.
 I didn't see him very often, but I will still miss him.

Daniel Kovats was one of the most influential mentors in my musical career. The way he taught music theory inspired me, and what had once been my most intimidating subject soon became a class that I actually looked forward to! I found myself seeking his wise counsel in all types of musical matters and he always went above and beyond, as many others have pointed out so beautifully. The customized charts he wrote for me to sing with his big bands were AMAZING, and I have always been grateful to him for his kindness and support. To me, Daniel Kovats set the standard for what a professional musician and teacher should be, and I'll do my best to honor his legacy in my own little corner of the world!

I am very sorry to hear of Dan's passing, He was a great person and incredible musician. I played under Mr. Kovats in the GR Youth Symphony from 1970 till 1974 and then played for a few years in the GR symphony with him. One of my favorite memorys' of Mr. Kovats was while playing under him in the youth symphony. During rehearsals, I always remember his saying "This is the part they said couldn't be played, and they were right." This always got a chuckle out of me and I remember this to this day. Mr. Kovats was a very generous man and did lots for me in helping to advance my music career. He was a wonderul man who will be missed.

I have many many very good memories, including when he took David and I out to shoot some historical rifles. He is patient and king hearted and an extremely talented at playing any instrament. He was always very outgoing and personal to everyone we met. It was my pleasure in knowing him.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing. His influence was important to me and I probably would not be a musician today without him. I will never forget him hiring me when I was in 7th grade to play English Horn in his band for an Amway convention!! I have spent my life working with young musicians and I know that the quality of his work with the GR Youth Symphony was excellent and hard to find today. I will miss him.

Dan attended Michigan starting in September 1950, as I did. We shared many fond memories of our time in the Michigan Bands. Following graduation, I ran into Dan at conferences, festivals and MSBOA activities. He was always friendly and kind. His musicianship was most admirable, as was his teaching demeanor. I feel so blessed to have known him and loved him. My wife Chris and I send our deepest sympathies to his family.

I met Dan in 1960 when I was a member of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony. In 1961 Dan changed my life. He made it possible for me to attend GRJC as a music education major. Dan was the most influential person in my life, not just in music but life itself. He never stopped believing in me. I have many fond memories of our musical relationship. One of the highlights of my career was when Dan & Char came to our home, spent the night & the next day Dan conducted the Baldwin Band also I will never forget the day & night we spent with them in Grand Haven and we talked music 24-7. I personally cherish the times in the last year or so visiting Dan and reminiscing at Oak Crest. We have all lost a very fine musician, wonderful humanitarian and friend. Although I never had the fortune to meet Mr. Kovats, he has indirectly played a huge part in my life by helping to form two music organizations that have shaped me as a person: the GVSU music department and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. His influence has been felt far beyond the students he taught.

Back in the 1960's, I attended GRJC in evening classes. Dan's Music Appreciation class was one of the first taken. I was a young mother and one of the first adult students at that time. His kindness to some of us "elders" in the class made the experience so enjoyable. I can still remember records he played illustrating program music. etc.. He influenced many us of not only to continue our education in all types of music but, in my case, to continue on to a college degree. He was a fine human being as well as educator. The places he taught and performed were so fortunate to have one of such great talent and "people skills". (At that time, he often told tales about his small son, "Wild Bill". Dan was a dear and loving friend for more than 47 years. He was truly one of the most open and giving human beings we have ever met. Our lives will never be the same without him. But the memories will fill us with a sense of warmth remembrance and love. How can we forget our vacations with our children to California and Colorado, the wonderful winter months in Arizona, our love of hiking the Desert Mountains, the golf games and so much more? I was so saddened to hear that Dan Kovats had passed away and would like to send my heart felt condolences to Char and family at your loss of such a kind and wonderful man.
 I was very fortunate to have gone to GRJC when Dan Kovats was there somewhere from 1963-1966 or so. I played in the concert band, in the orchestra and in the jazz band and enjoyed every minute of being under Dan Kovats musical direction. During this time I got to know what a gentle giant of a man he was as well as a fantastic musician and great teacher. The rest of the music students, including myself, learned that he was also quite a funny guy.
 I remember one time during band rehearsal when our musical efforts were failing miserably. Well Dan didn't know what to do, so he (jokingly) threatened the band with turning on his lighted and blinking sign that said "Play The Notes". Of course everyone in the band was horrified. We were all saying NO NO NO, please don't turn on your sign ..... we will do anything, but please don't turn on THAT SIGN. So anyway, while we were still quivering in our boots ..... Dan decided NOT to turn on his sign. Phewwwww !!!! The rehearsal went much better after that !!
 I have no idea where he got his sign, but it was a very effective tool to hold over our heads to really get us to try and play better.
 I have talked to my older brother Norm as well as my twin brother Jim who were also in GRJC's band programs and we think that Dan Kovats never actually turned his "Play The Notes" sign on .... EVER.!! It was just like Dan to have his sign, but never actually turn it on and use it.
 We will all miss Dan Kovats wonderful musicianship as well as his kind spirit and his great and friendly personality. I would like to think that a little bit of him will live on in all of the students and fellow musicians that he has touched. Thanks for the memories Dan ... till we meet again.

Ah...the end of an ERA! I LOVED Mr. Kovats. We have so many fond and funny memories of the years my sister and I and friends played under him in Youth Symphony, and at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. March 5, 2013. I just now learned of Daniel's death. I have often thought of him and his many kindnesses in the years since I left Grand Rapids, more than 40 years ago. It's nearly 50 years since my audition for the Youth Symphony but I still remember it as well as many other moments during our association in Youth Symphony and the Grand Rapids Symphony. He was unfailingly positive in his approach to me, to the orchestra, and to music. It seems a simple thing, but his kindness made a positive and a needed impact on my life, perhaps more than he could have known. I remember him with deepest gratitude. Bruce Larkin

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Kovats. He was the reason I attended Grand Valley and became a public school orchestra director. Thank you.
