Dennis dedicated much of his professional life to serving others, first as a skilled die maker at Alloy Tek Corporation, and later as a dedicated firefighter with the Grand Rapids Fire Department, where he bravely protected his community for many years. Known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and quiet strength, he retired with a well-earned sense of accomplishment and pride.
He was preceded in death by his parents Virginia (Paulsen) Balkon and Earl Balkon; stepmother, Johan Balkon; and brothers John Balkon and Rich Tonning.
Dennis will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his devoted wife of many years, Patti; children Corey (Rebecca) Balkon and Kelli Nelson; cherished grandchildren Caden Balkon, Jax Balkon, and Lauren Nelson; 12 brothers and sisters Patty Bialek, Linda (Jack) Flory, Janet VanderLaan, David (Karen) Tonning, Cathy (Mike) Popowich, Christine Tonning, Bernie (Tracey) Tonning, Judy Briggs, Carol Polich, Karin (Russ) Chudy, James Balkon, and Stacy (Gary) Loew; along with a large extended family of many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Throughout his life, Dennis found deep joy in the simple and meaningful things. He treasured every moment spent with family, creating cherished memories on family vacations in the motorhome that brought laughter and connection across generations. His adventurous spirit shone through on motorcycle trips, where the open road offered freedom and excitement. At home, he delighted in tinkering—fixing, building, and improving—always with a practical hand and a generous heart. Dennis was a man who lived with quiet faith, unwavering loyalty, and a genuine love for those around him. His presence brought comfort and steadiness to his family, and his legacy of kindness, dedication, and adventure will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A time of visitation with family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418.
