Jake retired from Bissell, Inc., where he was employed his whole civilian career. He served during WWII in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Roper. The ship destroyed the first German submarine off the coast of North Carolina. The ship was then deployed to the Pacific theater where it was attacked by a kamikaze suicide bomber. Jake was seriously injured and returned home to undergo a long convalescence. Jake and Helen spent many years with family and friends enjoying the cottage that they had built on Arbutus Lake. Jake was faithful to his Lord and Savior and was a willing volunteer at his church. He spent his retirement years transporting elderly members to doctor appointments and to hospital visits.
