Marilyn was grounded in her faith and her family, and she also had a passion for nursing. She attended Wheaton College and received her nursing degree from West Suburban College of Nursing in Chicago before attending Hope College where she met Carl. Her nursing degree took her to Holland Hospital, but psychiatric nursing was her calling, and she worked at Pine Rest Christian Hospital as a nursing supervisor for more than 50 years. During this time, Marilyn and Carl supported their children’s passions, whether it was horses (even learning to braid a mane and tail!), piano and guitar lessons, or golf at Sunnybrook Country Club, but always with a focus on academics along with their other interests. She also enjoyed her monthly bridge game with lifelong friends.
Not one to be idle, Marilyn retired from Pine Rest, but often filled in for nurses on vacation and holidays. Throughout the years, Marilyn enjoyed summers in Holland, and later in Ludington, and winters on Marco Island, Florida. She also loved to travel. She and Carl journeyed throughout the U.S., and she even convinced Carl to go with her to Churchill, Manitoba, so she could see polar bears. Her last big adventure was a cruise with her children and grandchildren from San Francisco through the Panama Canal, ending in Ft. Lauderdale and visiting several countries on the way.
Marilyn and Carl were members of First Reformed Church in Grandville for many years.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Cook Memorial Chapel, 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI.
