Robert Thomas Miller, of Hudsonville, MI, started his eternal rest on June 14, 2023. Robert “Bob” was born the youngest of three children on June 16, 1941 in Battle Creek, MI. His father, Army Capt. Marcel Vincent Miller, and his mother, Jeanne Louise Miller, moved to Detroit, where Bob went to Austin High School, the University of Detroit for his Bachelor's, and Laval University for his Master's. He married his high school sweetheart, Michaela Ann Dunn, on June 29, 1963, and they created a home and family of seven in Romeo, MI.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Michaela; and oldest son, Keith. He is survived by his six children Matthew (Nancy) Miller, Marcie (Michael) Palmer, Roberta (Trevor) Neumann, Thomas (Kenia) Miller, Marc (Aimee) Miller, Jane (Jerry) Snider; daughter-in-law Theresa Giacalone; 25 grandchildren; sister, Patricia Haupt of Birmingham, MI; and brother, Jerry Miller of Napa, CA.
Bob’s energy for family, friends, and adventures was unparalleled, earning him the lifelong nickname “Smiley.” There wasn’t a side road, trail, or back alley Bob avoided, and he would commonly find the “long way” home, taking time to find new and beautiful things to share with others. Bob enjoyed his many bicycles, kayaks, snowshoes, skis, and all things French. He devoted his life’s work to coaching and teaching linguistics, speaking many languages, and making friends around the world.
Bob was a loyal husband of 55 years, a devoted father of seven children, a grandfather of 25, a great-grandfather to seven, and a school teacher and coach to many over 30 years. Lord, it is time to rest. Bob, you will be greatly missed and left no shortage of loving family and friends with great care for this world. Rest in peace, Smiley.
The family welcomes memories and messages in their online guestbook at www.cookcaresgrandville.com.
