

He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 2, 1927, the son of Martin and Marie Van Wingen. Roy was a long-time employee of Steelcase, retiring after 41-1/2 years as the file weld department superintendent. Roy was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying time at his cottage on Big Star Lake while fishing and deer hunting. He also loved taking his boat to Lake Michigan fishing for salmon in the summer and ice fishing for perch in the winter. Roy will always be remembered for his sense of humor and bringing a smile to everyone he met.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Debra Sue, and granddaughter, Kimberly Moody.
Roy leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 70 years, Gladys Van Wingen; his children Larry Van Wingen, Garry (Caren) Van Wingen and John Van Wingen; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and extended relatives.
Roy’s family will meet with relatives and friends from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017 at the Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St., S.W., Grandville, Michigan. Funeral services for Roy will be at 11 am Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the Cook Memorial Chapel (East building), with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
