A man of many talents, “Captain Bill” was a lover of all things boat related. He was self-taught; there was never anything that he couldn’t fix. From a young age, Bill was into everything, especially boats and cars. A fine craftsman, his artistic and mechanical passions resulted in breathtaking restoration projects.
Shortly after finishing high school, Bill served his country in Vietnam. After returning home, Bill married and started a family. He worked alongside his father in the family business and later at Grand Rapids Community College. Bill retired in 2012 and focused his efforts on boat restoration, spending time with friends and family, preferably on the boat docks. He was a strong, resilient man who always had a ready quip and smile. He was at his best around others, talking to people and learning about the world. His love and appreciation for nature carries on through his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Loretta Grey; sister, Jane Grey; brother-in-law, Kenneth Smith; mother of Deb and Andy, Linda (Grey) Munyon. Bill is survived by his partner, MaryAnn Oosterveen; daughter, Deborah (Tim Greiner) Grey; son, Andrew (Christina) Grey; grandchildren Ava Grey, Hannah Grey; sisters Kathryn Smith (Grey), Bette Bierling (Grey), and Marianne Grey.
