Joanne Mary Shields

Joanne grew up in Salinas where she attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Notre Dame High School, and Hartnell College. Prior to moving to Grants Pass, Joanne lived in the small community of San Benito, CA, where she realized her dream of raising a large family on a working sheep and cattle ranch with her husband Jim and beloved in-laws John and Carla Shields. She enjoyed serving her community as a school board member, 4-H leader, and FFA supporter. In Grants Pass, she enjoyed being a member of Red Hat Society, Rascals, and Computer Bugs.

Her kind heart and generous spirit endeared her to many. Her greatest joys in life were being surrounded by her family and the many friends she made throughout her lifetime. Joanne is survived by her children David Cheek of Grants Pass, Danette (Robby) Harfst of Jacksonville, Debbie (Vern) Simmons of San Benito CA, Susie (Ken) Hornback of Rio Rancho NM, Robert (Becky) Shields of Juneau AK, Laura Shields of Hollister CA, Jim Shields Jr., Carla Shields, 15 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jim Shields, father Paul Lepisto, mother Serena Cheek, step-father Dale Cheek, brother Charlie Marbach, and her grandparents who were her mentors and role-models Serifina and Richardo Sargenti.

The family is especially grateful to the volunteers and staff at Celia’s House in Medford, OR for their compassionate hospice care of Joanne. Respectfully following Joanne’s wishes, there will be no formal memorial service.
