Mary Sue Moulton

Mary Howells Moulton was born in Albany, OR on May 12, 1922 and died peacefully in her home near Grants Pass on Jan. 15, 2018. Her parents, Allan P. Howells and Lillian Howells had 4 children, of which Mary was the only girl. She graduated from Oregon State College in Corvallis, in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics Education.

While in college she met Ralph R. Moulton from Grants Pass, and they married on Dec. 28, 1944, while he was home from WWII on furlough. She often joked, “Little Mary Howells from Albany, Oregon married a military man so she could see the world!” And that she did. They traveled the world in the course of his career and Mary enjoyed living in both Sevilla, Spain and Teheran, Iran for several years each. Over the years Mary taught Home Economics as often as she could, but also taught General Science and Early Childhood Development from Jr. High to Jr. College level, having received her MA in Early Childhood Development from Western Reserve University in 1964.

Mary & Ralph raised three surviving children; Georgia Moulton, and Colleen Kirkland (Dennis) of Grants Pass, and Ralph A. Moulton (Joan) of St. Louis. She is also survived by 6 grand children and 11 great grand children. Ralph R. Moulton died in 2007. After retiring Mary and Ralph moved back to the Grants Pass area in 1974 and both were active in the United Methodist Church in Wilderville for many years. More recently Mary joined the Unitarian Universalists of Grants Pass. During retirement Mary has been active in supporting many local non-profits, serving on the Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley, and establishing the Moulton Family Vocal Music Fund designed to encourage the choral music programs in all of the District 7 high schools.

Her life-long interests included; music, cooking, sewing, discussing political and world affairs, and of course, teaching children. In lieu of flowers, she would appreciate memorial contributions to the Boys & Girls Club, the JOCO Food Bank or the charity of your choice.
