Paul was born in Oakland, California, to Bernard and Lucille Carlin.
He graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School.
Paul joined the California Air National Guard and served in Vietnam. After the military Paul was hired as an orderly at Doctors Hospital of San Leandro. It was at Doctors Hospital where he met Joy, the love of his life. They married in 1972.
Paul attended Merritt College in Oakland and graduated with a degree in radiologic technology. His first job with his degree was at Doctors Hospital of San Leandro. He operated one of the first C.T. and MRI scanners in the San Francisco's East Bay. He soon moved up to managing four imaging centers in Castro Valley, Oakland, Walnut Creek and Berkeley, all in California. He was an excellent manager and his employees loved him. His theory was happy employees were productive employees.
In 2000, Paul and Joy bought a retirement home in Brookings. They both loved the house and the quaint little town.
Early on, when Paul developed an interest in computers, he bought a TRS-80 micro-computer system in the early 1980s. He had a home computer the rest of his life and was very good with them. For more than 30 years he was an avid Ham radio operator. For a number of years he participated in the Baker to Vegas Relay Run. He was member of the Pelican Bay Amateur Radio Club, and was club president three times. Paul was also a fierce advocate for emergency preparedness.
Paul and Joy enjoyed traveling. Together they visited many foreign places, including Bora-Bora, Hawaii (six times), Mexico (four times), the Cook Islands, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Australia (twice), Ireland, Italy, Greece and Sicily. Altogether he was a good man, husband and father, and he had a good life. We were hoping for many more years with him. Rest in peace, my love.
Paul is survived by wife Joy; daughter Caneel Carlin; grandchildren Kaitlyn Marie, James William; mother in law Mary Darcy; cousins Martha Glaser and Robert Glaser; and aunt Barbara Glaser.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard James Carlin and Lucille Corine Carlin; sister Nancy Jeane Carlin; and uncle Jules Glaser.
A celebration of life will be scheduled in spring 2018.
