Daniel Edwords

Daniel “Dan” Edwords, age 70, of Highland Village, TX passed away July 10, 2018. He was born on May 5, 1948 in National City, CA and raised in the San Diego area by his late parents Norman Edwords, Lois Edwords and Alice Covey. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Katherine and daughters Christine Edwords, Melanie Carlisle and husband Heath, Velma Buchanan and husband David, and Beth Edgerley and husband Ross, as well as his six grandchildren. Dan will also be greatly missed by his siblings Ann Becker-Miller and husband Tommy, Rodger Edwords and wife Carolyn, and Mark Edwords and numerous extended family and friends. Dan proudly served four years as an AT in the United States Navy on the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. He was married to the love of his life, Katherine, for 41 years and still made an effort to date her, more so as they entered into retirement. They were lucky enough to travel together to great places like Hawaii, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Canada.

Dan was a field service specialist in the field of automation for over 30 years, but he was more of a teacher to anyone who would listen for most of his life. Dan had a passion for reading and research in any field he found interesting, and he would gladly pass that knowledge down in the form of advice or conversation to anyone with the need to know it. His favorite subjects were physics, chemistry, astronomy, algebra, geometry, and science and math of any kind. He loved history, art, literature, photography, nature conservation and music. He did not play sports but he loved to learn and watch the game. He later passed his passion down to his daughters who learned about those same subjects whether they wanted to or not.

Dan not only contributed knowledge to this world but he also contributed his time by volunteering for every organization he and his daughters were a part of: the Knights of Columbus, the Dallas Museum of Natural History, the Girl Scouts, the FFA, PTA, high school booster clubs, soccer clubs, and the list goes on. He was a devout Catholic donating his time and effort to the Catholic Church and Catholic schools whether through fundraising programs or donating his time to chaperoning on field trips. He had a deep love and respect for God, and trusted that He has a plan for all of us, even if we do not understand or know where the path will lead us.

Dan always showed his love and support for his family and friends no matter what. If a family member needed help, he was always there. If a friend's vehicle was broken down on the side of the road, he was always there. And if his daughters or grandchildren needed him, he was always there. He never missed a martial arts tournament, dance show, drill team competition, soccer game, FFA showing, band concert, swim lesson or anything else his daughters and grandchildren took an interest in. Dan never missed a birth, baptism, birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas. He was always a part of his grandchildren's lives, and will always be the greatest "Pa Pa" a kid could ever ask for. He always made a day fun playing with trains, dolls, Lego sets, walking dogs, hiking, watching movies, telling stories or reading with "Pa Pa".

Dan always encouraged his daughters and grandchildren to always do their very best especially when it came to education. Education was his solution for everything and he would always tell them that the way to break down any wall was knocking it down one brick at a time. He taught his daughters and their husbands everything about being a great parent whether it was how to get a baby to sleep, how to discipline with love and patience, or how to embarrass kids by chasing after their school bus with a snack bag of carrots that they purposely left at home.

Dan’s wife and daughters will always be grateful to him for his love and support, and cherish the time that they had with him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but those who think of him will always have a story to tell. Dan left behind his knowledge, wisdom, friendship and love to everyone who considers themselves lucky and better for knowing him!

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 19, 2018, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Grapevine following with a burial at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Daniel Edwords to the American Cancer Society or the American Bladder Cancer Society.
