Eileen was born on September 19, 1927, to Fredrick and Bertha Zemke in Chicago, Illinois, and spent most of her life living in or near the city. Her parents both worked at the Chicago Stock Yards during its peak and married after meeting at a “trolley stop” outside it’s gates. They went on to have 3 daughters, Eileen being their youngest. She and her sister Shirley would recall vividly life for the family during the Great Depression, but that was often accompanied by the stories of the fun they’d have escaping city lifer to their uncle’s farm in central Iowa most summers.
