Typically, a life story begins with when and where a person was born. If Jana were writing this herself, she would say her life truly began at five years old in Hallsville, Texas, when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was proud of being Born on the Island (BOI) in Galveston, Texas on September 22, 1947 — but what mattered most to her was the day she became a Christian and began her life in Christ. She prayed daily that her family, friends, and all she knew would experience a personal relationship with Jesus.
On May 1, 2026, after an eight-year battle with cancer, Jana entered her eternal home in Heaven and met her Savior face-to-face. Welcoming her were loved ones who had gone before her, including her beloved parents, William L. Baker, Jr. and Melba Jewel (Hale) Baker; her brother, William “Buddy” Baker; and her niece, Jennifer L. Baker.
Jana grew up primarily in East Texas, where her father was called to be a pastor. She is survived by her siblings, Randall Baker and wife JoAnn, and her sister, Lisa (Baker) Butt and husband Robin. The first church her fathered pastored - Hatley Memorial Baptist Church in Hallsville – was her favorite. In 1960, the family moved to Kilgore, where Jana met lifelong friends Pam (Mercer) McWilliams and Sharon (Loper) Morrison. She graduated from Kilgore High School in 1965 and later attended East Texas Baptist University, where she became the first freshman selected as Homecoming Queen.
In the summer of 1965, while her father pastored Bayshore Baptist Church in La Porte, Texas, Jana met the love of her life, Daniel H. Rogers III — “Danny.” They married on April 22, 1967, and shared 59 wonderful years together.
Before marrying, Jana worked for NASA as an assistant to the director of the Apollo program, a chapter of her life she loved talking about. After marriage, Dan and Jana moved to Austin.
Faith and family were always at the center of Jana’s life. Joining Hyde Park Baptist Church, Dan and Jana raised their children, David Baker Rogers and Jill Rogers. Jana later worked at Hyde Park Baptist High School, where she served students and families for eleven years, eventually helping raise scholarship funds through the Development Office. Former students often remembered her office as a place filled with warmth, encouragement, and laughter.
Jana later joined Allen Shivers Radiation Therapy Center, where she continued using her gifts for fundraising and event planning. One event she greatly enjoyed organizing was the Dallas Cowboys Pancake Breakfast, helping raise funds for individuals receiving radiation therapy.
In 2006, Dan and Jana moved to Boerne, Texas, where they embraced life in the Hill Country and became members of First Baptist Church Boerne. A gifted pianist and singer, Jana loved praise and worship music and joined the Women of Worship Choir, ministering through music in churches and women’s prisons. One of her favorite memories was singing alongside the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir in New York with her daughter, Jill. They often reflected on that experience by saying, “If that was even a glimpse of Heaven!”
In 2015, Dan and Jana moved to Flower Mound to be closer to family — son, David and his wife Elizabeth and their children. Beyond her love for Christ and devotion to her husband and children, Jana deeply loved being “Noni” to her grandchildren: Taylor (Hale) Middlesworth, husband Adam and great-grandson, Theo; Grace (Rogers) McCalley and husband Trey; Ryan Rogers; Ruslan Rogers; and Summer Rogers. Nothing brought her greater joy than loving, encouraging, and spoiling her family.
Jana loved flowers, plants, depression glass, antiquing, thrifting, cooking, politics, traveling, the outdoors, time with friends, swimming, watching old westerns with her husband, holidays with the family, and time with her side-kick, daughter, Jill. She was an exceptional wife, mother, sister, grandmother, mother-in-law, cousin, and friend. She was gorgeous inside and out and truly lived as a Proverbs 31 woman. What her family and friends will miss most is her beautiful smile, contagious laughter, and warm spirit.
You are deeply missed, Jana/Mom/Noni… until we see you again.
