Robert Michael (Mike) Thompson, 79, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away, November 28, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Gladys Thompson and is survived by his brother Jimmy (Debi) and their children. Mike leaves behind his loving wife, Sandra, daughter, Andrea (Bill) Tart, and grandchildren, Allison (Leo) Reyes, Ashley, and Ellen (Andrew) Almond.
Mike recalled fondly his days at Central High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, as well as his years serving as a corpsman in the US Navy in Portsmouth, Virginia, Bethesda, Maryland, Great Lakes, Illinois, and Argentia, Newfoundland, as well as his career in sales, retiring from 3M company.
Mike had many interest. He was an avid reader. Aviation was an important part of his life ranging from building model planes to learning to fly and becoming a flight instructor. He taught his daughter, Andi, to fly as a youngster, setting her on her career path to become an Airbus 330 captain for Delta Airlines. He participated in aviation organizations, Civil Air Patrol, and Quiet Birdmen. He loved Corvettes and took part in car shows, road rallies, parades, garage parties and acting as president of the Jacksonville, Florida Corvette Club. Baseball was important to him, both as a player in his younger years and as a fan in later life. Shooting was an interest, being a member of Saint Augustine Rod and Gun Club. He loved animals. He was known to pull the car over so he could save a turtle which was crossing the road. His labrador retrievers were family pets, as well as hunting companions. He delighted in taking his grandchildren to Disney World. He was a true Southern Gentleman.
Mike’s quick wit and sense of humor were his trademarks. He had a unique ability to light up any room with his clever jokes and stories, leaving behind laughter and cherished memories. His laughter was infectious, and his positive spirit was a source of comfort and inspiration to all. Mike will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered for his legacy of love, humor, and service which will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
