Wilburta, being a twin of her brother Wilbur, was known as Bert by so many who knew her well. She was born in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1933 to Wilbur Clarington Fugitt and Helen Leonore Parmenter. She had an older sister, Virginia Hudman and her twin brother Wilbur, who died at 5 weeks old. Bert always told of her fond memories of growing up on the farm in Nebraska being surrounded by many family members and friends.
In 1942, Bert moved to California with her family. She was quite ambitious as a freshman in high school to basically run Lloyd’s Hamburger Stand by herself. This experience created a desire to work at other restaurants and to lovingly host and serve family, friends and those in need with many meals and treats. A small serving was a term not known to her as she would usually cook to ‘feed an army’. In 1950, she graduated from Susan Miller Dorsey High School in Los Angeles.
Not long after graduation, Bert moved to Midland Texas where she became a receptionist for Dr. Charles Summy Britt. It was while she worked for Dr. Britt that she met and married his son, Charles Bowie Britt in 1950. They had 3 daughters, Laurie Martin, Lynn Pendleton and Jane Cueto. Bowie opened Britt Plumbing Company in Midland, and Bert took care of the bookkeeping for the business for 32 years.
After 34 years of marriage, they divorced, and Bert moved to the eastern part of Texas where she worked a few years as a House Parent for mentally challenged residents. She had a heart for many who faced challenges of any type.
After becoming a grandmother, Bert’s family quickly grew. She loved family get-togethers and would always have a game to keep her 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren entertained. Her ‘sugar free’ banana pudding was a regular dessert for most get-togethers and would show up in the large quantity needed to feed ‘her army’.
In 2003, Bert moved to San Angelo and lived in Independent Living communities. She loved the Lord and served through the years in Children’s Ministry, prepared and served food for Care Ministry, and served on the bus ministry. She would even take Jerry, her pet monkey, to schools and other places to bring joy to others.
In 2019, she moved to the Dallas area living in Assisted Living to be near her family until she passed away.
Bert, (Mom, Grammy, Memaw, Devoted Friend, and Volunteer) will be remembered for her love and dedication to the Lord. Her devotion led her to intercessory prayer asking for many to know Jesus intimately. She supported her daughters and loved ALL those Grandkiddos! She will be remembered by many for often asking most anyone, “Who is a person in the Bible, besides Jesus, you would first want to meet when you go to heaven?” We all wonder who she first met when she arrived on November 28, 2025.
