
died peacefully on September 18 at her home in Great Neck, NY. The eldest daughter of Rosalyn and Dr. R. Harlow Hermanson, Emily was born in Boston and grew up in Belmont, MA. Emily earned her B.A. from Clark College in Worcester, MA and a Master’s Degree in Biostatistics from Columbia University. She was married to Jim Levin for more than 50 years. After the birth of her two daughters, Joanna and Stephanie, Emily earned her Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University Law School, graduating third in her class. Shortly thereafter, her son Alexander was born. Emily went on to practice Environmental Law at Rivkin and Radler. Among many of her philanthropic pursuits, she served as president of the Great Neck Chapter of Hadassah Working Women, was a trustee of Temple Israel of Great Neck and was a co-founder and vice president of The Ellen Hermanson Foundation, an organization devoted to providing care and support to breast cancer patients and survivors on the East End of Long Island. Emily’s passions were ballet and classical music and she was a member of the Chairman’s Circle as a major supporter of the American Ballet Theater. Emily was meticulous in everything she did and was a talented needlepoint artist and knitter. She is survived by her Husband Jim, her sister Julie Ratner, her three children, Joanna Karp, Stephanie Torres and Alexander Levin. She adored and was adored by her grandchildren, Brett, Ryan and Brandon Karp; Mia and Nico Torres; and Natasha Levin and a devoted guardian to Natasha.
