Wonder person who always told me to believe in myself and my dreams.  I will miss him.

I mourn the passing of Irwin Cantor my neighbor at The Bay Club and Esteemed Member of Towers Country Club where it was My Privilege to serve him as Golf Starter


Irwin RIP. Something you could never do in life. Irwin was the very best engineer and friend an architect could have. I have missed him since I retired 23 years ago. You will be missed by all who were lucky to know and work with you.

Dear Gloria and family, 
This morning, I was surprised and saddened to hear of Irwin's passing.  We have worked together as structural engineers and he has been a good friend for years.  As I am sure many have told you, Irwin was always professional, curtious, insightful and a pleasure to work with.  He will truly be missed in our profession.  I am sure that he will missed by all of you much more.
I am sure that he had a full and rewarding life, but he was one of those people of whom you could never get enough.

Dear Murray, Laura and family,
We were so saddened to learn of the passing your brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Irwin.  We hope the way in which he left this world - as if he wrote the scenario himself - has been of some comfort to all of you, as it is to us.  When we  were growing up we took life for granted.  Now that most of us are in the Twilight Zone of life we appreciate each and every day for what it is: a gift!   The style of his passing was definitely a blessing for him: short, quick and without fanfare - and surrounded by loved ones.  What more can one ask?
We hope to celebrate happier days ahead.

Dear Gloria, Children and grandchildren,
The Crown has fallen off your family unit. With the help of G-d, and time, may you all be at peace. You were a devoted family. You were the pride of a very talented and admired man. Always busy, running around the world and doing, doing, doing. You can read about him and fill in the blanks - there are so many who felt honored to serve with him. 
We, his cousins will miss him always. We are grateful to have all of you to share our feelings of grief with.  May we share happier days ahead and good things in the future.

Son of my grandparents, brother of my father, father to my cousins, and, iconic figure globally in his fieled of structural engineering, he was, in two words, "uncle Irwin" to me, my sister, and our children.  Despite his accomplishments, unsurpassed professional supremacy, friend of Presidents and global leaders,, he was, "Uncle Irwin"!  What did that mean?  It meant a lifetime of beaming, bursting pride to "his kid brother", my father, or, tales of phenomenal projects growing up to our families, we beamed!  His parents, whom he idolized, spoke in loving and parental pride, humbly, because they did niot want anyone thinking "their son was a bigshot"!!!     Personally, days I spent with my Uncle as Grandpa was critically ill, allowed my Uncle and I to share moments of unbearable pain, yet, incredibly deep, insightful and personal discussions about Life, Death and Family.  I "knew", as did he, that Grandpa's passing changed all of our world's views, and, created a sense of "reset" into life's priorities.  Walking at night, on Collins Avenue together, no topic off limit, no regrets or accomplishments omitted from dialogue, will FOREVER be etched in my mind, clearly, strikingly, about how much he loved his family, his children, grandchildren and brother.  I was blessed, even during that life defining, altering and changing week.  For my family:  his wit, his "ability" to kibbitz, "tease" or simply drop a one liner about his "kid brother", notably a "tricycle from 1939", made for a generational running family joke, (or was it? :))))).   To me:  my Uncle was whom I solicited advice from on more than one occaison, knowing his crisp analytical mind was able to be playing mental chess, versus my mindset of mental "checkers".  Brilliant, focused, and, "right" were typical outcomes of his suggestioed opinion.  Last, my father adored, idolized, "bragged" (in kind ways), about his "brotehr".   We are all hurting now, sorting through the initial loss of this person who was so dear and cherished to all of us.  His presence will never be replaced, yet, memories of our lives as a family are perpetually ingrained, allowing us to reflect upon how fortunate, blessed and thankful we ALL were, to have Uncle Irwin in our lives!  Yes, even "without the bike" as a kid!  Seems he did just fine in the absence of that bike, eh?   Love forever, Alan, Justin and Brittany Cantor (Son, and grandchildren of his loving brother, Murray, the one who "got the bike"!!! :)

It was a great honor and privilege to have worked with Irwin on projects in India, Mexico and California. He was one of the greatest engineers and human beings I have ever knowna real mensch. He was mentor, role model and inspiration. I learned a lot from him and will miss him deeply. My sincere condolences to his family. 

I feel so lucky to have been present  at Irwin's last City Planning session.  We hugged and I said how nice it was to have served for a few years with him on that body.   During my time on the City Planning commission, I always learned from Irwin--he really was a giant in his field.   I will miss his sharp wit and keen intellect.    Irwin was someone who loved Queens unconditionally and represented it like no one else could have.    I will miss you, Irwin.    

How VERY fortunate were we to have had such a fantastic man as an Uncle.  Always a smile....always a firm handshake.....in our hearts forever.  Your Nephews,  Bobby & Gary Freiberger.

Irwin was a colleague on the New York City Planning Commissioner for 18 years.  I had the extreme privilege, and indeed pleasure, of sitting next to Irwin for 12 of those years.  Irwin was funny, intelligent, always prepared, and, above all, a gentleman and a good friend.  I am heartbroken! Rest in peace my dear friend.
