Irwin G. Cantor, Structural Engineer, age 90, of Bayside, New York, and Florida, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2017 of natural causes. Born in Brooklyn, son of immigrant parents, raised in Astoria, New York. Survived by his affectionate and devoted wife of 67 years, Gloria and loving daughters and partners Debra and Steve of New Jersey, Joanne and Alan of Massachusetts, and Cathy and Brian of Colorado. Adored by grandsons, Devin, Cameron and Gabriel. Also survived by his brother Murray of Florida along with nieces, nephews, and extended family; a father figure, friend, and mentor to many including his colleagues and network of lifelong close friends.
Irwin was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School and City College of New York. He founded the Office of Irwin G. Cantor and the Cantor Seinuk Group, structural engineering firms responsible for numerous prominent high rise structures in Manhattan and around the world. After Irwin retired from the firm, he continued to be involved with the engineering profession through his work for the New York City Planning Commission. He was Commissioner for 20 years, also providing in-house consulting for Tishman Speyer in New York. Irwin was recognized by his peers with numerous professional and civic awards.
An Air Force Veteran, Irwin was an avid and frustrated golfer, who was active in and recognized by Jewish foundations and organizations. He and Gloria were founding members of the Bay Terrace Jewish Center in 1955. Quick witted, accomplished, yet humble, Irwin’s sly grin, warmth, and charisma brought joy and optimism to everyone he encountered.
