They returned to the University of South Dakota in the fall of 1951. Alan graduated in May 1952 Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in Political Science.
While at the university he was active in student affairs, belonged to several honor societies and student government boards, most notable being Phi Beta Kappa. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity and served as its president.
After graduating, the Lords moved to Sacramento, CA, where he began his career in commercial banking. He was employed by Anglo California National Bank. While in Sacramento, his two sons were born – Thomas Alan and Eric Harold. After ten years in Sacramento, the family moved to Greeley, CO, where he accepted a position with the newly formed Cache National Bank as managing officer. Shortly after, he became bank president, serving in that capacity for eighteen years. In 1980 he became president and CEO of Affiliated Greeley National Bank. In 1983 he returned to Affiliated Cache National Bank as president and CEO, retiring from that position in 1985. He joined Union Colony Bank in Greeley as Executive Vice President, where he completed his banking career, retiring in 1990.
