

Gus attended UNC earning his Degree in Education and Master’s Degree in Math. He spent his college summers in Glen Haven, Colorado helping his uncle and aunts at their store. During these summers he hiked the surrounding mountains and climbed to the top of Longs Peak. After graduating college he taught in Julesburg. While there he met Betty Fitch. They were married May 29, 1949. They moved to St. Louis where Gus began his long career in education. He was a high school principal for Bayless School System for 29 years. He retired and moved to Greeley in 1981. He worked in the Greeley School System for 2 years and then became the senior coordinator for the city of Evans for 8 years. After his full retirement Gus and Betty enjoyed camping, gardening and their family.
Gus is survived by his wife Betty of Milliken; daughters Leanne Lederer and husband Don of O’Fallon, Missouri and Jennifer Ernst of Milliken; sons Ronald Ernst and wife Cookie of Olathe, Kansas and Steven Ernst of Loveland; 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Rhea Ernst.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17 at St. John’s United Church of Christ.
Gus requested in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to St. Johns United Church of Christ in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W. 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634
