She was born on December 27, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Martin and Elizabeth (Kolesar) Milkau. She attended schools in Chicago and graduated with a degree in elementary education from Illinois State Normal School (now Illinois State University). She taught school in Illinois for three years, then applied to the U.S. Department of the Air Force to teach in their overseas school program. She was selected to teach at Johnson Air Base in Japan. It was there that she met her future husband, Captain David Werking, who was the school’s dentist.
David and Clare re-entered the U.S. in 1961 and were married in Chicago on August 16 of that year. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri for two years and eventually made their way to Greeley, where they took up residence in 1963. Clare taught fourth grade at Jefferson school until 1965, when their only child, Curtis Werking was born.
Clare spent time doing volunteer work. She was a Jaycee-ete, a reader to children at Farr Library, a home room mother and various other things. She also worked on the 1980 census at the Colorado Office of Public Affairs and also worked as an administrative assistant in the wellness office of NCMC.
She was a member of PEO chapter EZ for many years and held every office but treasurer. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and at one point served on its council as assistant director.
Clare enjoyed playing bridge, doing puzzles and all sorts of reading. One of her greatest pleasures was making her friends laugh. She is survived by her son Curt, daughter-in-law Juya and two grandsons, David and Kai.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on August 29 at our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greeley.
