Diane was born on May 28, 1955, in Fort Devens, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Evelyn Courant. Her father, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and an officer in the U.S. Army, provided her family with a unique upbringing characterized by frequent relocations. Throughout her childhood, Diane lived in various states and countries, which contributed significantly to her personal development and worldview.
Diane graduated from Stuttgart American High School in Stuttgart, Germany in 1973. After that, her family returned to the United States and settled in Colorado. In 1977, Diane obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in social work from Colorado State University. Later that same year, she began working as a counselor at a residential treatment center for juvenile offenders in Denver, Colorado. It was there that she met another counselor, Douglas Schulz, who became the love of her life.
On August 25, 1979, Diane married Douglas at Risen Christ Catholic Church in Denver. They had one son, Gregory, and were married for 45 years. In 1982, Diane was hired by the 18th Judicial District as a Probation Officer. During her successful career, she created and participated in many programs designed to help offenders reintegrate successfully into society. She also played a key role in training and mentoring new officers and managing volunteer programs for the Judicial District. Diane continued her work and became a Supervisor until her retirement in 2014.
Her loving, compassionate, and caring personality helped lend itself to many close relationships with family and friends. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she volunteered at an elementary school assisting students with reading. Diane was also involved in a cooking group and a Christian prayer group in her neighborhood. She enjoyed fishing, reading mystery novels, gardening, playing pickleball, and participating in fantasy football. She collected miniature lighthouse displays and listened to Classic Rock and Jazz music. Notably, Diane was an exceptional cook and baker and was a passionate supporter of Colorado's professional sports teams, particularly the Denver Broncos.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Evelyn (Swanson) Courant, and her aunt, Sister Mary Courant.
Diane is survived by her husband Douglas; her son Gregory; her sister Mary Billings; her nephew Tyler Norwood (Allie) and their son Madden; her sister-in-law Elizabeth Lavelle (Brian) and nephews Devin (Fiona) and Ethan (Raena); her brother-in-law Paul Schulz (Joan) and nephew Joel; her brother-in-law Keith Schulz (Terri) and niece Lily; and her brother-in-law James Schulz (Misty) and nieces Cecily (Mathew), Farrell (Wesley), Avalyn (Matthew), and nephew Jacob.
