

Earl Walter Weiss, "Doc Weiss", 95, passed away on August 27, 2025, at Grace Pointe Senior Care Community in Greeley, CO. He grew up in Offerle, KS, attending Dodge City High School. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 and was stationed in England, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He married Dolores Mathes on March 15, 1951. Together they raised five children in Garden City, KS. Earl attended Kansas State University and earned his degree of DVM-Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He joined the practice of Fairbairn, Weiss, Swords and Smith in Garden City and practiced for over 30 years. Doc especially enjoyed his large animal practice. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, serving as Western District Trustee. After retiring he was the zoo vet for Lee Richardson Zoo for three years. In retirement, he and Dolores lived in Bella Vista, AR, Holiday Island, AR, and Greeley, CO. Earl was an avid hunter and fisherman in Kansas, Wyoming, and Arkansas. He enjoyed the farm ponds in the area, as well as the bigger lakes in the area. He also fished in Alaska several times, catching a 108 lb halibut, and many species of salmon. He loved taking his grandkids out fishing. He instilled that love of fishing in them. Earl was a member of the NRA, and Ducks Unlimited. Doc also taught Hunter Safety classes to the area youth.
Earl is preceded in death by his wife of over 70 years, Dolores, two daughters, Shirley Weiss and Karen Medlin, his parents, Alvin and Edna Weiss, a brother, Phillip Weiss, a sister, Mildred Quasabarth Holman, a granddaughter, Kara Foil, and a great grandson, Hunter Weiss.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharlene Gronau of Eagle River, AK, JoAnn (Dennis) Conway of Greeley, CO, one son, Kenneth (Bernie) Weiss of Monett, MO, eight grandchildren - Kevin (Danna) Claar of Garden City, KS, Kim Claar of Olathe, KS, Matt Gronau of Kansas City, KS, Katie (Mike) Yaniec of Eagle River, AK, Amy (Andy) Hansen of Goodyear, AZ, Jennifer (Ryan) Schmidt of Hays, KS, Cody (Brittany) Weiss of Bingham Canyon, UT, and Staci Ireland of Salt Lake City, UT; 18 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Earl and Dolores were members of the Lutheran Church in Garden City, Bella Vista, Holiday Island, and Greeley. There will be a service for Earl at the Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N 7th St., Garden City, KS, at 10:30 am on Friday, September 19, 2025, followed by a graveside service for both Earl and Dolores. Memorials to Lee Richardson Zoo of Garden City, in care of Garnand's.
