

He was born July 25, 1945 in Elkhart, Kansas to William and Katherine (Hicks) Hendershot. He and his brother, Larry and sister, Doris Kay, grew up in Kansas, spending their grade-school years in Hugoton and graduating high school in Liberal. Gary was a U.S. Army Veteran having served five years including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam as an auto repairman.
He married May Martinez in Loveland, Colorado on January 9, 1976. They had homes in Colorado Springs and Greeley. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and currently St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, May Martinez Hendershot, and his parents Bill and Katie Hendershot. He is survived by his brother Larry (Norah) Hendershot, sister Doris Kay (John) Greer, his son Gary William Hendershot, daughter Trisha (Dan) Hilliard, daughter Shauna Nickens, grandchildren: Andrew William (Chelsea), Jenna Hendershot; Kurtis, Kenton, Kevin, Katie Grossaint; Joseph Hendershot, Hannah Nickens and Emma Rodas, great-grandson Landon William Hendershot, and dear friend and brother-in-law, Art Martinez, and numerous relatives and friends.
He worked for Sears & Roebuck Co. opening and supporting new rural and mountain stores, managed a print shop, even owned a thrift shop in Colorado Springs.
For many years he was a stay-at-home grandpa, having helped raise grandchildren, Joey, Hannah and Emma.
He and several friends, who were married to business women that worked with his wife, May, formed a group and called themselves the “T-Hogs” (Trophy Husbands of Greeley). Not only did they socialize at big events that they were required to attended with their wives, but they also got together every other week for breakfast and frequently to play golf.
He was an avid golfer and would play at every opportunity including in many charity events to raise money for various causes.
Gary has always been the life of the party, we all enjoyed his ability to bring laughter with his amazing sense of humor and funny stories. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
A Recitation of the Rosary for Gary will take place at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2018 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 2222 23rd Ave., Greeley, Colorado. Internment Linn Grove Cemetery, 1700 Cedar Ave., Greeley.
