Harry Alex “Al” Jones was taken from us too soon on May 15, 2016, after battling cancer. Al leaves his wife Peg Lord, three children Eric Jones, Elizabeth Jones and Laura Jones, and one Granddaughter, Cairo Jones. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Erdner Parham Jones (1924-2001) and India Claire Smith Jones (1926-2007), and his brother, David Parham Jones (1951-1996). Pursuant to Al’s request there will be no public memorial service. His remains have been cremated and will be shared with his family and scattered over places dear to him. For information regarding contributions to charities he loved, please contact his wife Peg via email: [email protected].
Al was born in Nashville, Tennessee , on May 26, 1949. After graduating from Donelson High School in 1967, he was off to Freed-Hardeman College and Memphis State University for his undergraduate studies, then onto the University of Tennessee Medical School where he specialized in pediatric medicine. Al completed his pediatric’s residency at the City of Memphis Hospital and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Laramie’s first encounter with Al was in 1978 when he practiced pediatrics with Dr. Terry Furgiuele until 1980. Al then continued his practice in Helena, Montana until 1981 when he returned to Tennessee and worked in Winchester until 1983. Al returned to medical school to become an anesthesiologist and upon completion of his anesthesia residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he returned to Laramie in January, 1986 to set up shop where he worked until his retirement on January 6, 2016. His favorite saying upon entering the hospital was “Isn’t it a wonderful day” and when asked how he was doing he would simply reply in his Tennessee drawl “Peachy”. During the Christmas season Al enjoyed sharing with his family and co-worker’s Christmas carols performed by meowing cats and barking dogs – may the CD rest in peace.
Al was not all about work. He believed you needed to enjoy life with all of your senses. He enjoyed many things including kids and their activities, family trips, foraging for mushrooms in the Snowy Range, sharing his cooking skills, and playing golf, just to mention a few. Later in his career he pursued one of his greatest passions by traveling to Africa and Guatemala to give medical care to those less fortunate. He continued to do so to the very end with his last trip being to Guatemala in September of 2015. He believed so much in this calling that many times he recruited many of his friends and co-workers from Laramie to go with him. Job well done Dr. Jones.
A special thanks to Pathways Hospice in Fort Collins and family members who made it possible to keep Al at home until he passed. From Al “thank you and God bless.”
