Emerging into this world September 10, 1981 in Columbus, Ohio, Ian grew into a talented musician, writer, warrior, a friend to many, and a loving and cherished husband. Through “Match the Pyre,” and his solo project, Ian's music reverberated deep within his listeners, casting beautiful and visceral melodies of joy and sorrow that left his audiences spellbound. In his working novel “The Highway Man,” His visions of a fragmented world, torn by distorted notions of time and uncertainty, depicted the strength that Ian had to navigate all obstacles tangible and fictional. As in his approach to music and writing, Ian dedicated himself to strict study and physical training. Recently, Ian achieved the position of Research Assistant to the Anthropology department at the University of Northern Colorado, where he studied under Dr. Zia and Dr. Macbeth with Gaby and Joanie, who he looked up to academically. Training under his favorite Sensai, Peter Steeves, Ian quickly rose through the training regimen of Budo Taijutsu—a part of the Japanese culture and the Samurai that he admired most of all. He derived great feelings of accomplishment from being able to influence others positively through his teaching and artistic endeavors. Ian's music, character, and creativity attracted many friends, all of which will remember the harmonies and memories that were created in his presence. However, it is his beloved wife, Tina Rose, who he married in Loveland, Colorado, in January of 2016, that will carry on his undying love.
With Tina, Ian loved adventuring the natural, open spaces of the world, especially their more recent trips with Nik Wagner and Tiffany Armstrong. It is in these places that his unusual love for M.R.E.s and his desire to build his own shelter would truly blossom. Along with his love for all things natural and unnatural, Ian was influenced by writers such as Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, J.R.R. Tolkien, and was musically inspired by Black Lab, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Glen Hansard. Ian had a knack for transforming his personal experiences and talent into opportunities for others. Creating worlds for his friends to journey through was Ian's specialty. Through Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Dungeons & Dragons, Deadlands, and other roleplaying games, Ian was able to provide a place for his friends to escape the mundanity of life. Using this storytelling prowess, musical genius, and compelling energy, he became a magnetic force that drew people to him. Some of his longest, and most cherished friends, are James Sherman, Arman Sohaili, and Matthew Underwood-Tripp.
Loved by many, Ian will especially be remembered by the family he left behind. Ian is survived by his father Shelby James Jones and his wife Terri Jones; his mother Carol Hunter; his siblings Kimberly Moss, Eric Jones, and Laura Jones; his many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his wife, all those who grew up with and grew to know Ian will remember the quality of character that he brought into this world. Ian's love for Christmas, Halloween, Star Wars, flowers (Cherry Blossoms, Magnolias, and Orchids) was shared to everyone around him.
May you, Ian James “Jamie” Hunter Jones “Jonesy,” forever walk peacefully through Yomi-no-kuni with your dog Phoenix, who is finally reunited with her loving master.
