James Earl Maley, born January 9, 1943, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on May 21, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Nelda, his wife, Susan, and siblings, Marilyn and David. He is survived by his sister Suzie (Jerry) McCleod, his sons Thomas (Lisa) Steele-Maley, Dave Maley, Paul (Jen) Maley; his five grandsons and one granddaughter.
Jim lived a life of service and was a role model to those who knew him, starting with his own siblings. He took his kind-hearted nature to the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic and to residential youth treatment facilities throughout the US. He finally landed in Anchorage, Alaska, where he led Alaska Children’s Services (now AK Child and Family) with a competent and gentle hand, providing treatment and quality care for children and families. For 20 years, Jim provided mentoring and leadership to dozens of dedicated employees.
The dedication and service that Jim brought to his work was balanced by his enthusiasm and joy for music, story, and family. His love of live music was nurtured during his early days singing in a barbershop ensemble and later trading music recordings for live shows. While he made many good friends as he shared his love of music with others, no one benefited more from Jim’s love of music than his sons who attended hundreds of live shows with him over many decades.
Jim was always the biggest supporter of his sons and their endeavors in life. He was a fabulous storyteller and everyone who knew him loved him fully.
In lieu of a funeral, Jim’s life will be celebrated through music, food, and laughter in the near future. Arrangements are in process and will be shared widely. ALL are welcome to attend and we hope so many of you can.
Instead of flowers, please consider making a memorial donations to AK Child and Family, 4600 Abbott Rd, Anchorage, AK 99507.
