Robert Glenn Rudolph, 90, passed away peacefully February 29, 2016. Robert was born on October 29, 1925 in Ft. Collins, CO. He grew up with three brothers and two sisters on the family farm established by his father in 1912. Graduating from Ft. Collins High School in 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. at age 18 and served at bases in Kansas, Colorado and Texas. After his discharge in 1945, he attended Colorado A&M and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy in 1950. While at college, he met his future wife, Dorothy Mae McDonald. They were married on September 12, 1948, and resided near Timnath, CO, where together they raised two children, Kevin and Martha.
Robert (Bob) continued the family farming business, which evolved from a modest farming and dairy operation. In the early sixties, Bob and his brothers Larry and Bill joined in a family corporation, Rudolph Farms, Inc. which grew to farm about 975 acres in Larimer County, another farm in Wyoming, and a ranch north of Laramie. The corporation was dissolved in the early 90’s with his brothers’ retirements. Over the following 20 years, Bob continued farming, actively managing small acreages of corn, beans, wheat and hay production. Last year, his 89th, he managed the production of several hundred tons of hay and corn.
Bob has been a member of several farm organizations, including the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Ag Committee. He served on the Board of Education for Poudre School District R-1 from 1963 to 1975, and was Board Vice President from 1973 to 1975. During this time, he helped establish the Larimer County Board of Cooperative Services and served as president of that board from 1971 to 1973. He served on the Urban Growth Area Review Board from 1989 to 2002.
Agriculture and education were the cornerstones of Bob’s life. While raising cattle and sheep, and planting and harvesting the farm’s crops, Bob acted as cheerleader as his wife and children each completed their college degrees and went on to successful careers. Bob’s greatest pleasure was engaging in lively intellectual discussions with family and friends of current events, politics, international affairs, and the business of agriculture. He read extensively, including a wide variety of newspapers and periodicals, and historical and biographical works covering twentieth century political leaders and events. One of his favorite pastimes was to meet his farm friends and associates at the local Charco Broiler and, over a good Scotch, share business news, upcoming plans, and mentor younger farmers, advising them in the business.
Bob is survived by his son Kevin (Valerie Wassill), grandchildren Michael and Julia, and daughter Martha (Robert Brown), and grandchildren Mason, Logan, and Cobin. His wife, Dorothy, who had Alzheimer’s disease, preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 2, 2016 at 10:30 am at Timnath Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, CO. 80526.
