Robert Oskar Singer, Ed.D, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, just after 1 p.m., at Meadowview of Greeley Assisted Living in Greeley. He was born Jan. 12, 1923, to Berthold and Gizella Singer in Budapest, Hungary.
Bob went to high school in Budapest, and graduated in 1939, after which he and his parents immigrated to London, U.K. It was here that he attended Cliftonville, and Technical Colleges. During World War II, Bob acted as an Air Raid Warden in London, England, during the Blitz, as well as in Cardiff, Wales. At this time, he worked as a representative in the west of England, for Columbia Pictures Corp.
Bob married Margaret Camrose Williams on Jan. 1, 1944. They immigrated to New York City, N.Y., where Bob volunteered to be in the U.S. Army, which lead him to serving in Military Intelligence in Berlin, Germany, as he was able to speak several languages. After being discharged, Bob and his wife, Margaret, moved to Denver, then to Greeley, in 1948. He worked as an assistant manager until 1966, at the Greeley Feed and Bean Co., which was owned by his uncle, Rudolph Singer. In 1954, Bob was elected to the Greeley School Board and served as its member for 11 years. During this time, he also was elected, first as a member, then as president of the Colorado School Boards of Education. In 1966, Singer accepted an appointment as director and subsequently dean of continuing education at the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned his doctorate in 1973, and subsequently earned the rank of professor, in 1980. He retired from UNC in 1985.
Bob and Margaret traveled abroad a great deal and also enjoyed plays and philharmonic concerts offered by the university, throughout the years. After his retirement, he volunteered for many causes. He also worked tirelessly on the genealogy of his family, and that of his wife, Margaret.
Bob is survived by his only daughter, Susan Camrose Ducote, who is an artist living in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Too, Bob is survived by nieces and nephews and a grand-nephew, who live in Britain and Israel.
Both of Bob’s parents are deceased.
Robert was greatly loved by his family, friends, and those who cared for him. They will likely remember him for his love, loyalty, honesty, intelligence, and interest in others, to name only a few of his many exemplary traits.
The family of Bob Singer is very grateful to the caregivers and other staff who lovingly took care of him while he was living at Meadowview Assisted Living of Greeley, as well as the nurses and staff of the Hospice of Accent Care.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greeley (929 15th St., Greeley, CO).
In lieu of flowers, should you care to do so, donations may be made the Hospice of Accent Care, 1180 Main St. Suite 9, Windsor, CO, 80550.
