Roberta "Bert" Alida Bohn Miller, 88, passed away peacefully from complications of Parkinson's disease on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Grace Pointe Senior Care Community in Greeley, Colorado, where she had been a resident since spring 2023.
Bert was born December 14, 1935 in Longmont, Colorado, to C. Robert and Irene (Johnson) Bohn and was raised on their 5-acre dairy and chicken farm in Longmont. She attended Bethany College for two years in Lindsborg, Kansas majoring in Art, after which she entered Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver earning her RN degree. At that same time, Roberta took classes at Denver University earning her BS degree. Bert met Carroll Miller at Presbyterian Hospital during the summer of 1957 and they were married November 27, 1959 in Longmont. Carroll and Bert lived on the family farm in Middlebury, Indiana while Bert worked as a nurse at Goshen General Hospital and in 1965 she accepted the position of Director of Nursing. They returned temporarily to Colorado in 1968 so Bert could complete her Master's Degree in Nursing from the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver.
Bert never felt comfortable being in the spotlight, but she was thrust into it when her only child, Eric, was the first baby born in Goshen, Indiana on January 1, 1969, and her picture was on the front page of the paper. The family returned to Colorado in 1971 when Bert was offered the Director or Nursing position at the hospital in Greeley, Colorado. She spent her remaining career in Greeley and retired as Vice President of North Colorado Medical Center in 1995. Bert was also active in the Greeley community by serving on a number of non-profit and church boards and was appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Nursing.
In 1987, Bert was the first woman to be inducted into the Greeley Rotary Club, again being put in the spotlight on the front page of the paper. Her quote to the reporter when asked how she felt about it: 'I thought there wasn't going to be any publicity on this.
Bert was a no-nonsense person with many talents. Her work ethic, can-do spirit and artistic abilities were second to none.
Although they lived in Greeley, Carroll and Bert also owned a 1700-acre ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming at which they spent many weekends and holidays. In addition, they managed and maintained the family farm in Indiana and helped host regular Miller family reunions there beginning in 1992. Bert always was working on some home-improvement or decorating project, cleaning, cooking, landscaping, etc. She sewed many of her professional clothes and was masterful at hosting guests at the ranch and at annual holiday office parties and 4th of July get-togethers. When Carroll purchased an old car wash to remodel into his real estate office, Bert would come home after long days at the hospital and work past midnight painting and doing other projects during the remodel. Bert's house was always impeccable and she worked hard to keep a very organized household for her family.
In her limited spare time, Bert was an avid reader and greatly relished the challenge of crossword puzzles. She and Carroll also traveled extensively, having enjoyed more than 80 trips to Mexico and other tropical destinations. In the fall of 1995, Bert and Carroll spent a month volunteering in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, repairing and tarping damaged roofs after a hurricane. She was also very proud of her grandsons, Ryan and Nathan, and was very interested in their accomplishments. Bert looked forward to the annual family trip to Mexico to spend time with her son, daughter-in-law and grandsons.
Bert is survived by her husband of 64 years, Carroll of Greeley; son Eric and wife Chellie of Normal, Illinois; grandsons Ryan Miller of Bloomington, Illinois and Nathan Miller of Omaha, Nebraska; sister Katherine (Kate) O'Donnell of Arvada, Colorado; brother Glenn Bohn of Wasilla, Alaska; sister-in-law Eloise Schrock of Goshen, Indiana, and many loving and adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.
An additional memorial service will be held in Indiana in summer 2024 to lay her ashes to rest in the Forks cemetery located on the family farm.
Bert was an amazing person who was a hard-working, dedicated and caring wife, mom, and grandmother to our family.
She had a significant role in making us who we are today...and we are grateful.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to either Hesston College, Hesston, Kansas, or Aims Community College, Greeley, Colorado for nursing scholarships.
