

She graduated from La Junta High School, and Colorado State College of Education at Greeley with a degree in elementary education. While attending college, she met her husband, Lowell Knight. They were married June 27, 1953 in Greeley at Trinity Episcopal Church. Lowell got a teaching job in Fort Morgan, Colorado, so they moved there and started a family. They had 2 children. Shirley substitute taught for several years after her children were in school, then worked for the Department of Social Services. She worked there many years, retiring in 1986.
Once Shirley and Lowell both retired, they moved to Estes Park, Colorado. They thoroughly enjoyed being in the mountains. She like hiking the trails around the community. Shirley loved to travel, she made trips to Spain, Africa, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Africa was her favorite, as she loved seeing the wildlife and the beauty of the country.
A few years after Lowell passed, Shirley moved to Greeley to be closer to her daughter, and granddaughter. Her son moved back to Colorado in 2020 after residing out of state for many years. She was so very happy to have him back in state.
Shirley will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughter, Marki, of Indiana, her son, Ron, of Colorado, her granddaughter, Courtney (Andrew) and her great grandson Dylan, all of Indiana, her niece Julie (Bob), of Alaska, and nephew Eric of Tennessee. She also leaves behind her dog Jelly.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her stepfather, Charles Maxday, sister in law, Nancy and her husband Bill. Shirley absolutely loved her dogs, those waiting for her are: Doc, Cinder, Duchess, Darnell, Nellie, Otis and Bear.
Shirley chose not to have any type of service. She supported many charities, however, the family suggests memorials be made to, The Humane Society of Weld County, 1620 42 St., Evans, CO 80620.
