

He leaves his wife of 40 years, Suzanne (Loveless) Powell; his daughter, Sharon (Mark) Ulrich; his sons, Russell (Bonnie) Powell and Matthew (Amy) Powell; eight grandchildren; and many close friends.
Tom was born on November 11, 1933 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He attended St. George’s Home for Boys and, after brief stints in mining and banking, relocated to Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and then began his 55-year career in the insurance business. He met his wife, Suzanne Loveless, in Denver CO, and they were married on September 4, 1976. After opening his own business in Castle Rock, he and Sue moved to Walsenburg and founded Walsenburg Insurance Center, Inc. in 1983. During his time in the insurance business, Tom was very active in the Colorado Propane Gas Association.
Tom was always engaged in the community, including work with the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, La Plaza de los Leones, Boy Scouts and he was one of the founders of the Northland Improvement District. He served one term as Mayor of Walsenburg and attended Huerfano Community Bible Church. Tom’s long list of achievements and recognitions include Scoutmaster and Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America; and Past Exalted Ruler, B.P.O.E. As Scoutmaster, he guided his Boy Scout troop of four to Eagle Scout status and rewarded them with a trip to Baden Powell House in London, England.
Tom was an avid collector of books, stamps, coins, tins and stories. He had a passion for animals and raised paint horses as well as exotic pheasants, ducks and peacocks.
A funeral service will be held at Allnutt Funeral Home in Loveland on September 16, 2016 and Huerfano Community Bible Church in Walsenburg on September 21, 2016. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Sister Carol Tlach, 324 E 7th St, Walsenburg CO 81089.
