

Born July 22, 1934 in Greencastle, he was the son of Paul and Lucille (Allee) Whitman and was a graduate of Greencastle High School “Class of 1952”. He had attended Purdue University School of Agriculture, receiving his certificate in Animal Husbandry. He was a Veteran, having served in the United States Army.
Gordon was a farmer and worked at the Tractor Supply Company, Greencastle. He had previously worked for the North American Capacitor Company, formerly Mallorys.
He was a member of the Greencastle Christian Church; Putnam County Fair Board; Farmers Home Administration County Committee 1964-1967; and South Putnam Community Schools Corporation School Board 1971-1975. He had received awards for National Champion Dairy Judging Team Richmond, VA. 1951; Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Basketball Player Award 1951-1952; Kiwanis Award 1952 for outstanding ability, sportsmanship, mental attitude scholarship, and Putnam County Fair 4-H Beef Showmanship Award 1953.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell (Aiken) Whitman; sons, Steve (Jody) Whitman and Greg (Janet) Whitman; a sister, Betty Bayliff; grandchildren, Andrew Whitman and Kayla Whitman; step grandson, Dustin Hiles; and great grandson, Gabriel Whitman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marjorie Kroft.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Cloverdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM on Friday until time of service at the funeral home
