Born November 22, 1937, in Pineville, MS, Red was the son of William Bartley and Margaret Celestial (Bush) Gilbert. He was a graduate of Pineville High School “Class of 1956.”
Red served his country by joining the military right after graduation. His first assignment was in Germany. After returning to the States, he worked for over 30 years in the Iowa Air National Guard until he retired as chief master sergeant. During the Vietnam War he was called to active duty for one year.
Red was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in both Sioux City, IA and Greencastle, IN. At church he helped with construction, counting money, driving the bus, and maintenance. He also served as an usher and a board member.
Red loved to work with his hands. He could build or fix almost anything! After retirement he took great pride in his lawn and his grandchildren. He also loved to feed the birds and eat pecan pie.
Red was preceded in death by his parents; sister Edna Sibley; brothers Roland & Gherson Gilbert; half-sister Mae Gilbert; one grandson; and two great grandchildren.
He married “the prettiest girl he’d ever seen,” Shirley (Jackson) Gilbert on July 15, 1960. She was the love of his life and faithful companion until his last breath. He is also survived by his children Cheri (Mark) Biggs of Greencastle, IN; Debbie (Marlin) Betts of Brazil, IN; and Tim (Krysta) Gilbert of Denver, CO; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Red’s family was his greatest treasure.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at the Little Walnut Cemetery with military honors.
Because of his generous heart to those in need, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Red to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM.org).
The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for their care during his extended illness.
