Mrs. Gilley was born January 30, 1916 in Winterville, NC to the late Charles Quincy Martin and Queenie Barber Martin. She was the youngest of five children, raised during the Great Depression. Mrs. Gilley armed with the knowledge of how to survive and stretch a dollar, she and her husband opened Tip Top Service Station and Grocery Store on Summit Ave., which they ran over 35 years.
Mrs. Gilley was a faithful and loyal servant to the Lord. Over the years, she was an active member in Rankin Baptist Church, Lee’s Chapel United Methodist Church and finally at Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church where she enjoyed being in Lee’s Bible Class. She enjoyed visiting the shut-ins and doing errands for them.
She was very proud founding member of Weight Watchers in Greensboro and followed the program as a Life Time Member. Mrs. Gilley loved to play Bingo at recreation centers in town, celebrating wins with a frosty and her friends. Exercise played a big part in her retired life-Estelle Geddy’s video and the AHOY program on GTN.
