

Dan was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Patrick County, Virginia, the youngest son of the eleven children of Robert Lee Cox and Edna Adams Cox.
Dan was predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings: Moir, John, Frances, Kate, Ada, Robert, Mary, James “Jim,” Julian, and Dorothy “Dot.”
Dan is survived by his wife, Nancy Pegram Cox; and his three children; Susan Cox Starbuck and husband Richard, Bruce Daniel Cox and wife Judy, and Bryan Lee Cox; one granddaughter, Victoria Rose Starbuck; many nieces and nephews; and a special brother-in-law, Henry Crater.
As a young man Dan worked for Piedmont Airlines in its early pioneering days, and at Western Electric for a time. Dan retired as Vice President of Manufacturing at the former Dixie Bedding Co., of Greensboro, which produced Serta Mattresses. After retiring Dan worked as a Consultant for Kingsdown Mattresses of Mebane and was Owner and General Contractor of Danco Properties of Greensboro. He graduated from Guilford College in 1963 with a B.A. in Economics.
Dan was a member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, where he formerly served as a Deacon. He was a member of the Greensboro Masonic Lodge for over 50 years; he became a 32nd Degree Mason, and was a former Master of the Lodge. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
Dan greatly enjoyed working in his yard, beekeeping, golf, bluegrass and gospel music, and his private pilot’s license until his health prevented him from flying. He instilled a love of flying in both of his sons.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm prior to the funeral service scheduled for 1:00 pm at Hanes-Lineberry, 515 N. Elm St. in Greensboro, on Saturday, March 9, 2019, with Rev. Virginia “Ginny” Tobiassen officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery after the funeral service.
The Family would like to thank the Staff of the Memory Care Unit at Brighton Gardens Greensboro, including, Riley the Wonder Dog; Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro; and Dr. Zachary Vaslo along with his nurse Kim Smith.
